Your team: You may work alone or with one other student in class for this project. If you choose to have a partner, you must both work on this project equally and you will be graded as a team.

Your identity: You are a pair of historians interested in the history and impact of the Cold War that began in the 1940s and lasted until 1990.

Your mission: To research and submit a “case study report” on ONE country or region of the world that was affected by the Cold War.

Your plan: To submit documentary evidence to explain and support the following four areas of study:

  1. A survey of the country/region Cold War Era

• What was this country like BEFORE the events of the

Cold War?

• What was the government, religion, culture, and

economy of this country/region pre-Cold War?

  1. An explanation of what happened to this place DURING the era of the Cold War:

• What happened here in relation to the Cold War?

• Which superpowers were involved and why? What did

they want (strategically, economically, politically?) Did

they achieve their aims?

• How did the society, culture, politics or economy of the

country change due to the Cold War?

•What was the IMPACT of the Cold War on this country?

  1. A focus on the END of the Cold War in this country: •How, when and why did the superpowers leave/stop influencing this country?

• What role did the native population and/or other

countries play in the end of the Cold War here?

• Was it a violent or peaceful transition?

  • An examination of the LEGACY that the Cold War has left in this country:

• What are the remaining Cold War influences?

• What impact has this legacy had on the government and

the economy here?

• Has the result of these Cold War influences been overall positive or negative?

Special instructions:

  1. Your case study portfolio should be a collection of documentary evidence that clearly details the above areas. You may include:

• pictures

• illustrations

• quotes

• short summaries or captions

• graphs, tables, maps

• other artifacts or evidence.

  1. You will NOT merely present a written report. Each section must be 2 pages in length (max) and must include a one-paragraph explanation of the material on the page. This statement must be in your own, original words.
  1. You must use a MINIMUM of 6-8 different documents per section. You may use the same sources more than once in your portfolio (i.e. in two different sections).
  1. Include a works cited list at the end of your case study. You must have at least 10 different, original sources.
  1. The entire portfolio should be bound together with a nice title page.
