(Peter) John Braspenning was a palace guard in the Netherlands. He came the United States in February 1904 because of poor living contains in the Netherlands. After six years he returned to the Netherlands to bring his brother Cornelius (Casey) to the United States. Casey worked for Love Construction Company in Muskegon, and John Braspenning worked as a farm hand for Gene Simeon. Anna worked for a Gene Simeon as "maid" during that time she became pregnant by Mr. Simeon. Rumor has it that he was married at the time and didn't want his wife to find out. Grandpa ( John) was also a worker for Mr. Gene Simeon. Grandma (Anna) gave birth to Margaret. Rumor has it that a marriage between Anna and John was arranged by her parents and Gene Simeon. Anna was still recovering from child birth when the wedding took place. John was threaten to be returned too the Belgium if he did not comply. He was offered the house and twenty (20) acres of land in Crystal Valley as a dowry, and a stipulation that the take care of Henry and Mary in their old age, which he did after a fashion.
It is rumored that John Braspenning was abusive towards the children and that Anna was afraid of him, It is rumored that Grandpa John was lazy, however after talking to his daughter, (Barbara) she relates that he was a hard working man, apparently Mary and Barbara were his favorites. The farm was a good working farm, with four bedroom house, ( two upstairs and two down stairs) it had a wood burning cooking range in the kitchen and a wood burning heater in the living room. It is said it took both stoves burning to keep the house warm in the winter. They had Dutch style wind mill to pump water and they raised cows, chickens, and pigs, as meat, dairy, and eggs supply. They grew corn, potatoes, turnips, beets, and beans for themselves and hay for the live stock. My mother tells of a drink called buttermilk pop, that Grandpa made for his family which she loved. Grandma Anna made a summer drink of ginger, vinegar, and water that I personally loved. No matter how many times I have made it, it never tasted as good as Grandma's.
