Current lesson objective: Apply knowledge of probability to a real world fun activity.

Technology used: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Internet Explorer/Google

Significance: Students will learn how probability is used to run a carnival game. Students will remember the concepts because they will have a fun activity in which to practice their skills. Students will use technology to create a realistic representation of a carnival game. At the same time, students will gain practice with basic computer operating system skills, word processing, and spreadsheet analysis.

Self-evaluation: The design of this lesson is unique in helping a 9th grade teacher provide students with a memorable, fun, and relevant lesson plan for teaching the principles of probability.

Procedure:

Step 1. Use a web browser to search for topic related information:

Step 2. Students can select their own carnival game picture and copy and paste it into

Microsoft Word. Then they can use it to create their own flier for advertisement (completed flier example not shown)

Step 3. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet will be created by the students to generate, tabulate, and graph the data and earnings for one day of operation of their assigned carnival game activity:

a) If carnival operator's guess is within one month of your birthday month, you lose $1.00.
b) If carnival operator's guess is outside of one month of your birthday month, you win a $.50 prize.
