December 13, 2016

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order at 6:12 PM.

Present: Diana Altegoer, Shari Coltoff, Carolyn Cristofalo (by telephone), Mary Fallon (Chair), Jacqueline Jefferson, Randi Siegel. Staff Present: Diane Menio, Michele Mathes

  1. Staff reported that they were working with CARIE’s graphic designer to design invitations for the donor reception.

UPDATE: Invitations have been designed. 200 invitations will be printed this week. The printer will address the envelopes and post the invitations.

  1. Staff reported that PECO will put CARIE in lights on their building and asked us for 3 dates. Committee members suggested April 20th (our event); May (Older Americans Month); or June 15th (Elder Abuse Awareness Day).

UPDATE: PECO said that CARIE will be in lights for 3 days and asked which dates we wanted. We selected May 1-3 (the beginning of Older Americans Month) which we thought would have the greatest public awareness.

  1. Committee members requested that the invitation list for the donor reception be circulated to Board members for additions/corrections

UPDATE: The list of donors with lifetime total donation of $900+, along with other individuals who have been strong and/or new supporters of CARIE includes approximately 160 names. The number of invitees will be significantly higher as spouses and “guests” will also be invited.

  1. Diane reported that nominations for the Spirit of CARIE award were closed. Two nominees for the Spirit of CARIE award were submitted. Both were regarded by Committee members as deserving the award.

UPDATE: The Spirit of CARIE Honorees selected for 2017 are Bill Benson and Ray Landis. Both have agreed to accept the award.Profiles of both honorees are provided.

  1. The Committee agreed that ticket prices for the annual auction and reception will remain the same as last year: $75 Early Bird; $85 Regular Single Ticket; $125 Benefactor Ticket.
  1. Mary Fallon asked whether there will be a problem with an individual signing in with 2 different credit cards.

UPDATE: QTEGO tracks registrations by telephone number rather than credit card number. The same individual can purchase tickets using one credit card and bid using another.

  1. Committee members discussed acquiring donations of wine and beer for the event. Diane noted that we had 8 cases of wine and 5 cases of beer last year. Yards Ale donated some of the beer; the wine was purchased. Randi Siegel offered to explore donations of craft beer and Carolyn Cristofalo offered to approach the Cape May Brewing Company.
  1. Committee members discussed ways of acknowledging CARIE’s 40th anniversary at the April event. Some ideas included playing on the theme of ruby/red (ruby is the 40th anniversary stone). It was suggested that a red binder with 40 gift cards be raffled off for $40/ticket.
  1. Diane said that Nancy Chernett reported going to a fund-raising at which a house in Mexico was raffled off. Only 250 tickets were sold for $100 each. Nancy will explore getting the house for a raffle at our event as well.
  1. Other ways of celebrating CARIE’s 40th anniversary at the event included having posters with events from CARIE’s past; having a question and answer (“test your knowledge”) about events/older adults; create an interactive timeline on our website; a large birthday card or tablecloth for all guests to sign.
  1. It was agreed by Committee members that at the event both Bernice Soffer and Diane Menio should be recognized.
  1. Committee members suggested that local funders receive invitations.
  1. Committee members discussed encouraging planned giving as part of the year’s recognition of CARIE’s 40 years of advocacy.
  1. The next meeting of the Marketing and Fund Development Committee will be on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, from 6 – 8 PM at CARIE.
  1. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 PM.
