-Caribbean still top cruise destination

There are new itineraries everywhere. River cruising is on the rise. Ships are on the move in Europe. Business is up in Australia. Double-digit growth is showing up in Asia. Sometimes, the Caribbean gets lost in the shuffle. The majority of people who cruise are from North America. The majority of North Americans who cruise still go to the Caribbean, a sea mecca that includes ports in Florida, Mexico and the Bahamas. At the Cruise Lines International Association, the umbrella organization for the cruise lines, the numbers tell the story for 2011. Read more

- Giant container ship arrives in Port of Long Beach from China

More than two-tenths of a mile long and more than half a football field wide, the Mediterranean Shipping Co.'s vessel, the Altair, made its way from China's Port of Yantian into Long Beach before the sun rose Thursday. It's the second time a container ship as large as the Altair had ever called to North America. The first one, the MSC Fabiola - about the same size as the Altair - was lauded when it first came to Long Beach in March. Read more

- Panama Canal to Implement Plan for Reducing Carbon Emissions in Watershed

- Shipowners Stress Their Role in Delivering Green Growth (Brazil)

On Saturday 16 June, in Rio de Janeiro, at a high level ‘Oceans Day’ event during the United Nations ‘Rio+20′ Summit on Sustainable Development, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) presented the views of the world’s merchant shipowners on delivering green growth. On behalf of ICS, the principal international trade association for shipowners, representing over 80% of the world merchant fleet, ICS Regulatory Affairs Director, David Tongue, told Rio + 20 delegates: “Shipping carries about 90% of world trade but is already by far the greenest form of commercial transport producing between 40 and 100 times less CO2, per tonne of cargo moved one kilometre than cargo aviation and significantly less than trains and trucks.
