- Idea, no more than 2 lines

- Idea, no more than 2 lines

- Idea, no more than 2 lines

The possibilities really are endless.

(Your question regarding follow-up -- ask them how long they’re going to take to get back to you.)

Hope to tackle (problem) soon!

(your name)

P.S. I stumbled onto this (really useful article/tool) that sheds light on (what we discussed earlier).

Example

Subject: How we can use gain a competitive advantage for NNN.

Hi Georgia,

After our last call, I got really excited about expanding into new markets and wanted to share some ideas I had about how we could help NNN company gain a competitive edge over the competition:

- Local partnerships should be seriously considered on all levels: vendors, marketing, promotions, and business development.

- All promotional campaigns should be deeply localized to cater to the unique culture and the multiple languages spoken in the region.

- By using a few automation tools to eliminate duplication efforts, we can speed up service delivery, product creation, and the quotation process.

The possibilities really are endless.

If any of these ideas warrant further discussion, I’m free next week; when can I expect the next step?

I hope to tackle this new market expansion situation soon!

Uzo

P.S. I stumbled onto this really great article (link) that should shed light on the unique regional requirements of the Japanese consumer market.

Good afternoon (name).

It was a pleasure speaking to you today about taking (company) to (result). Our conversation really got me thinking about (example of something similar you encountered in your professional experience, but didn’t get a chance to mention during the interview). While both (company) and (previous company you’re pulling an example from) have different goals and models, I learned a lot simply by studying how (comparison). (Talk about the comparison.)

If this warrants another conversation, I am free on (time) and can step by for a brief chat.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

My Warmest Regards,

(your name)

Example

Good afternoon Jeanette

It was a pleasure speaking to you today about taking Lifestyle Weekly online to boost overall readership. Our conversation really got me thinking about the New York Times, and the steps they have taken to boost their online readership. While both Lifestyle Weekly and the New York Times have different goals and models, I learned a lot simply by studying how they nurtured such a strong readership online without hurting their physical news presence. To balance out my findings, I also studied Cosmopolitan. I spoke to connections at both to develop a stronger understanding of the challenges they faced when making this transition.

I gathered my findings into a brief report, attached below. I hope you find it useful.

If the report warrants another conversation, I am free on Friday after 2 PM and can step by for a brief chat.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

My Warmest Regards,

Trevor

Pipeline 2 -- Champions

This pipeline is a bit more complex than the first because you’re asking someone to go out of their way to vouch for you to their hiring manager or CEO. This pipeline can be broken down into three parts:

  • A flattery-based introduction
  • Forming good will
  • Leveraging that good will

Intro Email to a Stranger

There are multiple ways to start a note to a referral you’ve never met. The point is to make them feel really good about themselves. You can offer congratulations on:

  • A personal achievement
  • The company’s financial performance
  • A specific company achievement
  • An award won by the company or person

The key point is to figure out what you both have in common. What can be a good topic of discussion that you both can talk about?

Here’s the template we typically use at CareerTuners:

Subject: (Name), love your (article/tweet/post/what you are doing at (company))

Hi (name),

Introduction: Gently flatter the connection for something awesome they or their company have done recently. Examples below.

  • I stumbled onto your profile/article/tweet when I was searching for information on solving a particular problem.
  • I wanted to congratulate you on winning the Salesman of the Year award at UUU company.
  • I recently read that your company have achieved record profits in its 10 year history and wanted to congratulate you personally on these results.

Form good will: Express interest in a specific part of their profile, like a specific accomplishment, a project, an interest, or hobby. Connect with them! It’s okay to make it personal. Examples below.

  • When I looked you up, I noticed that you’re working on creating a viral referral marketing software. As a business owner, this immediately caught my eye because I never realized there was a way to engineer referrals the way your software does.
  • While checking out your LinkedIn profile, I saw in your interests that you enjoy reading fantasy novels. Have you read the new Stephen King novel?
  • I noticed in your volunteer experience that you’re looking for opportunities to join an organization board. I might have an opportunity that could interest you.

Conclusion: I look forward to being connected with you on LinkedIn and learning more about all the cool things you have going on.

Example

Subject: Lincoln, love your post on modern day marketing techniques to boost customer engagement

Hi Lincoln,

I stumbled onto your post while searching for fresh ideas to boost customer engagement. After finishing it, I felt rejuvenated. It’s been a while since I’ve read ideas like yours, which go back to the root of engagement building but in incredibly unique ways.

While checking your LinkedIn profile, I noticed that you’re seeking opportunities to serve on the board of volunteer organizations. I’m a member of the JJJ volunteer group based in Chicago and we’ve got an opening that I feel would be up your alley.

Let me know if you’re interested! I look forward to being connected with you on LinkedIn and learning more about all the cool things you’ve got going on.

Intro Email to Someone You Know

Hi (name),

(Ice breaker referencing a recent event in connection’s life/career).

How are things at work going?

Example

Hi Kenneth,

How’s the new baby doing? Maria tells me that you just got promoted. Congrats!

How are things at work going?

Intro Email to Someone You Met at a Networking Event

Hi (name),

It was great meeting you (when and where you last met). (Bring up a topic you talked about).

I did a bit more research on (topic) and found this really interesting article: (link)

The author discusses (idea -- add value to the conversation you had at the networking event).

What do you think of (doing something differently based on the article)?

Let’s also connect on LinkedIn! My URL is linkedin.com/in/yourname.

I look forward to staying in touch, (name)!

Example

Subject: Great meeting you at the happy hour!

Hi Jerry,

It was great meeting you last night at Columbia’s Business Professionals Happy Hour. I appreciated your insight into how Business Solutions Plus is using SalesForce to better track sales data.

I did some more research on business tools start-ups can use to improve their sales tracking and came across this program: (link)

At first glance, it seems like a dream come true. The program appears to offer all the necessities required for efficient sales data tracking, along with a couple more points that we discussed. Do you have any experience with this tool? Do you think it’s a worthy investment?

I’d like to connect with you in LinkedIn as well. My URL is linkedin/in/myname.

I look forward to staying in touch, Jerry.

Send this email as a reply to their response to the Intro Email

Hey (name),

(Reaction to their reply.)

If it’s not too much trouble, I’d greatly appreciate some advice. (Describe scenario for which you’d like the Champion’s advice. Examples below)

  • Describe a scenario from work and ask their opinion on what tool/software you could use.
  • Get their opinion on the certifications in your LinkedIn profile. Make it clear what sorts of roles you’re interested in.
  • Explain the kind of management role you want to pursue. Ask which soft skill areas you should focus on developing to achieve career progression.
