Careers Final Summative Evaluation

Your Careers FSE has three distinct components:

1. Course Reflectionworth 5%

2. Career Research worth 15%

3. Job Application Packageworth 10%

Total 30% of your overall grade

Synopsis:

1. Course Reflection

You will answer some questions about your experience in Careers course this semester. You will have the opportunity to create a portfolio of your work. You will use this portfolio to help you answer the reflection questions. This will happen on the Exam day.

2. Career Research

You will research a career and/or post-secondary program.

You will choose to either do an oral presentation or create a visual display.

3. Job Application Package

You will simulate the process of applying for a job. You will respond to a job posting by creating a resume and cover letter. You will then do a mock job interview.

1. Course Reflection

On your Careers course’s Exam day, you will get a sheet will several questions regarding your experience in Careers course this semester.

Portfolio – during the last week of the course, you will have the opportunity to create and organize a portfolio of your coursework. Your portfolio will be submitted on the final class day and returned to you on the Exam day. A well prepared portfolio will result in a more manageable experience doing your reflection responses.

2. Career Research

Your job is to create a visual display (include all information and pictures to promote it) about a University Program, College Program Special Training Program or Career of choice. You must choose a topic and submit it to the teacher before doing anything else. Alternatively, you may complete an oral presentation to the class in lieu of creating a visual display.

Choose one of these four:

1)University Program – Choose a specific University program. You must include the name of the program, where it is, specific skills that would be beneficial, secondary courses required to be admitted,mark averages required, how many years the program takes, cost of the program, the types of courses that you have to take each year, in depth information about some of the first year courses, how many courses do you have to take total, co-op opportunities that are available, foreign exchange opportunities available, occupations that it will lead to, and any other interesting information.

2)College Program – Choose a specific College program. You must include the name of the program, where it is, specific skills that would be beneficial, secondary courses required to be admitted, mark averages required, how many years the program takes, cost of the program, the types of courses that you have to take each year, in depth information about some of the first year courses, how many courses do you have to take total, apprenticeships that are necessary, occupations that it will lead to, and any other interesting information.

3)Apprenticeship/Specialty Training (Military, Pilot, etc.) - Choose a specific Specialty Training program. You must include the name of the program, where it is, specific skills that would be beneficial, secondary courses required to be admitted, mark averages required, how many years are required to complete it, cost of the program, the types of courses/training/work placements that you have to do each year, in depth information about some of the major requirements to complete the program, include any extra requirements such as physical fitness testing, etc; occupations that it will lead to, and any other interesting information.

4)Career - Choose a specific career to display. You must include education or training required, places that would be hiring for this specific career choice, salary range, benefits, specific skills required, secondary courses required, a job description or summary, opportunities to advance in the job (go back to school, further on the job training), related occupations, and any other interesting information.

3. Job Application Package

Your job is to create a resume and cover letter in order to apply to one of these workplaces:

Be sure to tailor your skills to the specific workplace. You will also do a mock interview, the questions and evaluation scheme are below.

Interview Questions

1)What are some of the skills you possess that make you a good candidate for this job? Why do you think these skills will help you to fit in and succeed at ______?

2)Tell me about one of your school, extracurricular or previous work experiences and how that experience helps to define the way you are today and what you can bring to this business.

3)If a customer were to come to you with a complaint about how another employee you had become close friends with was rude to them, how would you handle the situation?

4)Is there any additional information about you that you think we should take into account when considering you for this position?

MARKING SCHEME

1) For this answer students must refer to specific skills, and relate them to the job in complete and organized sentences.

Skills may include:

  • Communication, Teamwork, Time Management, Problem-Solving, Organization, Interpersonal, Computer, Listening, Creativity, Leadership…

The student should also prove how they have these skills, or explain a situation where they have used or shaped the particular skill.

2) The student should be able to confidently describe their experience and relate it to their future in the job they are applying for.

3) This question should be answered in terms of their values. An answer such as that they would refer the complaint to the manager or quickly assist them, calm the customer and try to resolve the problem is best.

4) Any relevant information that is added is good, as long as they properly relate it to the job that they are applying to and answer using complete and organized sentences.

5) Appearance and Dress – Is dressed to impress! No jeans, has clean clothes, etc.

Did the student introduce themselves? Offer a handshake? Have a copy of their résumé?

No fidgeting, excessive “umming”, slouching, etc.
