(1Land 2L) - The Office of State Employment Relations is accepting applications for a Summer Affirmative Action Internship Program (SAAIP) offered by the State of Wisconsin. The internship program provides racial/ethnic minorities, female students and students with disabilities an opportunity to work in a professional setting within Wisconsin state government. The Robert M. LaFollette/Keenan Peck Legal Fellowship is offered by the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senator Herb Kohl (D WI) each summer. One law student will have the opportunity to work on the Judiciary Committee staff and assist counsels on a variety of issues. The Fellow must be committed to the progressive ideals of former Wisconsin Senator Robert M. LaFollette and the late Keenan Peck, a former counsel of the Judiciary Committee. Responsibilities may include: helping staff investigate judicial nominees; researching terrorism, crime, immigration, telecommunications, privacy, and antitrust policy and legislation; preparing Senator Kohl for hearings and other Senate and Committee business; assisting with administrative tasks; and answering constituent inquiries. Projects will be determined by the Committee's agenda, as well as the Fellow's particular interests. This is a full time position and a stipend will be offered. Arrangements can also be made to obtain credit, subject to the rules and requirements of each law school. Applicants must have completed at least one year of law school. The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) invites first and second year law students to attend its Legal Studies Institute (LSI).LSI is aneleven-week summer program that combines a legal placement and a 3-credit constitutional law course with networking opportunities and career development activities. The Institute gives participants the opportunity to meet and interact with leaders in the legal profession – enabling them to build a valuable professional network as they enter careers in law. The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau would like to announce openings for Summer Counsel positions for Summer 2012. Each year the Bureau hires approximately 15 1L’s and 2L’s to take over full caseloads for the summer. Summer Counsel are supervised by Clinical Instructors at the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau who work collaboratively with Summer Counsel to develop case strategy and advocacy plans. All Summer Counsel will actively engage in multiple stages of trial advocacy including factual investigation, settlement negotiations, and legal research and writing, and 2L Summer Counsel will practice in court arguing motions and conducting other oral advocacy under Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:03. Each Summer Counsel will receive a docket consisting of housing, family, government benefits, and/or wage and hour cases. The position is 40 hours per week for 14 weeks (May 21st to August 24th) with 2 weeks of vacation. The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau was founded in 1913 “for the purpose of rendering legal aid and assistance, gratuitously, to all persons or associations who by reason of financial embarrassment or social position, or for any other reason, appear worthy thereof.” As the nation’s oldest student-run legal services organization, the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau aspires to be an engine for progressive change and social justice. The Bureau is an entirely student-run non-profit law firm currently composed of approximately 50 second and third year Harvard Law School students who provide free civil legal services to a diverse population of low-income clients in the Greater Boston area.
(3L) - The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit is accepting applications for staff attorney positions located in Richmond, Virginia. Positions are for one-year terms with the possibility of an extension for a second year. Applicants interested in part-time employment may be considered. While some positions may be available as early as Spring 2012, most positions will be filled by candidates who will be available in August or September 2012. Attorneys hired directly out of law school will be appointed at Court Personnel System Classification Level 27, which is currently $58,569 annually. Staff attorneys will assist the judges of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in the consideration and resolution of cases on appeal. Applicants must possess superior academic credentials and writing experience. The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois has an immediate need for a Staff Law Clerk. SALARY: JSP 11-1 (currently $62,909 per annum). The State Bar of Wisconsin will be launching its popular Lunch with Lawyers series this semester with attorneys from the Business Law Section. The Business Law Section brings together attorneys who have a special interest in the business law that affects banks, corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies. The section also presents CLE programs at State Bar conventions and publishes a newsletter. Working committees include: Anti-Trust/Trade Regulation, Employee Benefits, Entrepreneurial Law, Insurance Law, Nonprofit Organizations, Securities Law, UCC and Unincorporated Business.
Attorneys at the presentation will discuss their career paths, opportunities in the field, and how students can best position themselves for a Business Law practice. Pizza will be served. Judge Blanchard is a former law clerk to the Honorable Walter Cummings, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney and the former Dane County Attorney. He has interviewed numerous candidates for assistant district attorney positions, and he has some strong feelings/impressions about ways students and new attorneys can help themselves. Cheryl Rich Heisler, president and founder of LAWTERNATIVES, will be presenting a program on alternative careers at 12:05 on Thursday March 8, 2012, which will cover job search strategies, networking, sales and marketing strategies and other resources related to alternative careers. In addition to the program, she will be meeting with 3L students in 30 minute, individual consultations for the remainder of the day on Thursday March 8th and from 9 AM to 1 PM on Friday March 9. Multiple Presentations On Financial Aid & Loan Repayment - March 15 and 16, 2012 - See Rooms Below (ALL)
Dr. Jeffrey Hanson will be at the Law School on March 15th and March 16th to discuss how students can manage financial aid loan repayment and strategies for making loan repayment fit within your budget. Specifically, the program will cover: understanding loan terms and conditions, knowing how much you will have to repay and to whom, defining short and long term financial goals, developing an affordable budget plan and estimating how much you can afford to repay each month, what to do if you cannot afford to make a loan payment, loan forgiveness programs, and sound record keeping. There will be four presentations. Two will be general presentations and two will be specifically for students interested in public interest careers.

Online registration for the Loyola Patent Law Interview Program has started. To register, please go to the following website and click on the "Register Now" link. Please note that at this stage, you will only be required to enter basic information (uploading your resume and bidding on interviews will take place later in the semester) and that our school is listed alphabetically as University of Wisconsin Law School on the registration form's drop down menu of law schools. There is a non-refundable $35 registration fee for students. You will need to pay the $35 fee with a credit card to complete your online registration. You should receive an email confirmation of the registration (please also check your junk mail folders if you do not see a confirmation email in your inbox). The deadline to register is March 5th.
The Loyola Patent Law Interview Program is a two-dayinterview program held in Chicago each summer where patent law employers from across the country interview law students for summer positions and post-graduate employment. The 2012 Patent Law Interview Program will be held on Thursday August 2nd and Friday August 3rd in Chicago, IL.
