Planning 10 Name ______

Focus Area Project

The 2004 Graduation Program supports achievement for all students, offering a range of options for focusing your studies in areas that interest you. The program teaches you skills that you will need to plan a successful future by identifying, exploring, and developing your personal strengths – and learning how those strengths can be employed in the workplace or built upon with further education and experience. Research has shown that students who focus their studies in areas that interest them are more engaged in school and more likely to graduate than unfocused students.

To that end, the Graduation Program supports all students to

·  Consider the broad range of education choices and career options available

·  Learn about and consider eight possible Focus Areas during Planning 10

·  Develop a Focus Area that interests them to pursue during Grads 11 and 12

·  Explore the wide range of post-secondary education options for one or more Focus Areas

Focus Areas are based on courses and programs available at secondary schools and post-secondary institutions in BC. They are:

o  Business and Applied Business

o  Fine Arts, Design, and Media

o  Fitness and Recreation

o  Health and Human Services

o  Liberal Arts/Humanities

o  Science and Applied Science

o  Tourism, Hospitality, and Foods

o  Trades and Technology

You have been assigned to a group based on a Focus Area you identified as being one of your top four choices in our survey. The people you are working with have also identified this Focus Area as being one of their top four choices.

You will receive the following materials:

·  Information package for your chosen Focus Area

You also have the website we identified in class as a resource:

http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/graduation/graduation_focus.htm

as well as the Internet itself to use as a resource for gathering the required information.

Your tasks

-  As a group:

  1. Research and identify the following information related to your chosen Focus Area:
  2. a description of the focus area (100-200 words)
  3. a list of secondary school courses applicable to the focus area (this may include courses NOT offered currently at ATSS)
  4. 3-5 employment options (a job in this focus area that requires LITTLE OR NO POST-SECONDARY TRAINING), including job title, description, and wages/benefits
  5. A list of post-secondary programs for at least TWO institutions including at least four courses that need to be taken in each program, and an estimate of the cost of each program
  6. 3-5 career options (jobs in this focus area that require some post-secondary training), including job title, description, and wages/benefits
  7. An explanation of how this focus area connects to another focus area (100-200 words)
  1. Once your group has gathered all the required information, you will create a display that shows the focus area title, the group member names, and all the information as outlined above. This could be a power point, a poster, a short presentation, etc. Everyone in the group will have responsibility to check that all sections are complete, edited for spelling, grammar, clarity, and that the project is neat, appealing, and ready on time. It can include graphics, captions, charts, data and/or statistics as well as words to showcase your chosen focus area. Any information gathered from the internet must indicate the source.
  1. Once all the projects are complete, they will be presented to Planning 10 students.

- As individuals:

1. Each person in the group must prepare a summary of a job or career of interest to him or her (within the focus area), with descriptions of any education requirements (courses or programs), job responsibilities or duties, wages/benefits, and future job prospects. This will be a typed assignment, 200-500 words, double-spaced, spell-checked and printed out for submission.

Please provide references for all your sources for both portions of the project.

Each class you will be provided with a checklist of who was present, what tasks were to be accomplished, and what was actually done in class. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make sure you pass on any required information to your classmates.
