Cardiff City FC Academy Sport Science Internship

The University of South Wales, Glamorgan in partnership with Cardiff City Football Club is looking to recruita number of MSc Interns to help contribute to the academy operation based at University of South Wales Sports Park.

As part of this internship, the successful candidate will have the option of studying one of the following full-time MSc programmes:-

  • MSc in Youth Sport Coaching
  • MSc in Performance Coaching
  • MSc in Sport, Health & Exercise Science

To qualify for the MSc programme students will be expected to have at least a good Honours degree classification (2:2) in a relevant subject. For details of the MSc courses contact:

The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to an ongoing programme of personal and professional development, to include a contribution to in-house research and development activities. They should have an appreciation of the scientific underpinnings of team sports, and the capacity to deliver practical sessions in an individual and a group environment. Most importantly, they should possess a strong team and work ethic and a passion for working in an applied sport setting. Furthermore, the successful candidates will possess the professional manner required to work in a professional football club. A full driving license is preferable.

Person specification:

Essential:

  • BSc in Sport & Exercise Science or a Sport related topic
  • Football coaching experience (minimum level 2 / UEFA C licence)
  • An interest & knowledge in core movement patterns
  • An understanding of football and the physical demands associated with participation in the sport.
  • Confident in standing up and delivering sessions with individuals / training groups
  • A passion to learn and ability to act professional at all times.

Desirable:

  • UKSCA accreditation or working towards this.
  • Previous experience of dealing with elite athletes
  • Previous experience of working in a professional football club.
  • Full UK drivers licence.


Under 16 Sport Science Intern (Part-time)

Job description, roles and responsibilities:
Directly responsible to: Rhys Carr (Lead Academy Sport Scientist), Neil Lewis (Head of Sport Science & Medicine) & Dick Bate (Academy Manager).

Hours:

Part-time (Approx 20 hours per week) as required by the Sport Science & Medicine department (May include unsociable hours – Can be flexible around academic commitments)
Duties and responsibilities:
• Monitoring of all U16 players (physiological & training load data) and reporting this to Lead Academy Sport Scientist

• Daily/Weekly training reports

• Implementing appropriate recovery strategies as directed by Lead Academy Sport Scientist & Head of Sport Science & Medicine

• Leading of session warm-ups (with specific conditioning themes) and cool-downs

• Fitness testing of players

• Sessional hydration testing

• Fortnightly height & weight monitoring

• Match day supervision (will involve occasional overnight travel)

• Supervision of strength & conditioning sessions

• Implementation of athletic development curriculum

• A competency in the teaching of Olympic/compound lifting techniques would be desirable.

• Attendance of monthly sport science & medicine meetings.

Development Phase (U12-U15) Sport Science Intern (Part-time)

Job description, roles and responsibilities:

Part-time (Approx 20 hours per week) as required by the Sport Science & Medicine department (May include unsociable hours – Can be flexible around academic commitments)
Duties and responsibilities:
• Collection of RPE data from all training sessions involving development phase players and reporting this to Lead Academy Sport Scientist

• Implementing appropriate recovery strategies as directed by Lead Academy Sport Scientist & Head of Sport Science & Medicine

• Fortnightly height & weight monitoring

• Leading of sessional warm-ups (with movement skills themes) and cool-downs

• Fitness testing of players

• Liaising with coaching staff regarding players athletic development and feeding this back to Lead Academy Sport Scientist

• Match day supervision (Home games only)

• Implementation of athletic development curriculum strategies

• Attendance of monthly Sport Science & Medicine meetings

• Compulsory attendance of weekly day release sessions
