Conference Support Program

Statement of Purpose: The Capitol Medical Society (CMS) of the National Medical Society supports student travel to conferences with a premedical or medical education mission for students to foster and facilitate that interest. Applications shall be completed and submitted to the CMS scholarship committee no later than two months prior to proposed dates of travel unless waived by committee. CMS is not responsible for reimbursement of obligations incurred prior to advance approval.

The CMS Scholarship Committee, in conjunction with the CMS, will be responsible for implementing these guidelines each fiscal year when dispersing funds for student travel.

1. The CMS may award up to $500 for those students who wish to attend amedical conference. Purposes considered will include participation in leadership activities and formal presentation.

2. Students granted a travel award will be required to submit a brief after action report to the CMS scholarship committee detailing what they learned by attending the conference utilizing the CMS Travel Award After Action report prior to reimbursement. Report shall be submitted within two weeks of completion of travel prior to reimbursement being dispersed. If a presentation was made, submission of the presentation as an attachment will be required.

3. Conference purpose must be consistent with goals and objectives of the National Medical Association.

4. Award can include the costs of travel to the conference location, hotel accommodations at the location, and the cost of conference registration. Food expenses are not considered as part of award.

5. The CMS scholarship committee shall, upon review, submit to the CMS president its award recommendations. Recommendations of the scholarship committee, upon review and approval of the CMS president, shall be submitted to the CMS membership for approval. Simple majority shall constitute approval by the CMS membership. Students who are denied funding for any reason can appeal directly to the CMS president. If the CMS president wishes to override, this may be accomplished in conjunction with a simple majority vote by a meeting convened with a quorum in attendance in accordance to CMS by laws.
