MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education go into Executive Session at 5:35 p.m. for the purpose of Superintendent evaluation.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.

CANTON CELEBRATES

Superintendent Case introduced the following new certified staff to Board members: Katherine Watson, Jennifer Stevens, Elizabeth Hagymasi, Jaclyn King, Lauren McCaw, and Karla Principe.

The Board recessed for a brief reception from 7:08 p.m. to 7:25 p.m.

INFORMATION and REPORT

Student Report

A written report was distributed to the Board detailing the activities at the High School. Nick provided information on Spirit Week, Picture Day, College Presentation and the process of hiring a new guidance counselor.

Superintendent Report

Mr. Case asked Ms. McMullin to speak to the Board on SAT’s, AP Testing, and ACT Testing. She provided a written handout and briefly reviewed it.

Ms. McMullin informed the Board that Canton was approved for an Open Choice grant in the amount of $114, 900. The Board will receive further information on the grant and be asked for acceptance at the Board meeting of October 8, 2009.

Superintendent Case informed Board members of the Town Charter meeting that will be held on October 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the Canton Community Center. He reviewed the proposed changes and the question that will be placed on the voting ballot.

Mr. Case reported on the success of Sam Collins Day and the outstanding musical performance of our high school students.

He informed the Board that two ninth grade students, Samantha Chase and Josh Goeben, along with Mrs. Paula Deaver appeared on the Better Connecticut show today. They spoke on the Lego competition they were involved in.

Mr. Case shared information on the ribbon cutting ceremony of the Boundless Playground that will occur Saturday, October 3rd, 11:00 a.m. at the Shoppes in Canton.

“The Iron Chef Food Competition for Teens” program was shared with the Board. Teresa Dotson and Todd Christopher will be conducting an eight week program at the high school. Funds for this program were obtained by a grant awarded to Teresa.

An informational packet on the Canton Academy was distributed. This booklet explained the referral process and guidelines. A full presentation will be made at an October meeting.

Chair Report

Chair Rhea asked Board members to hold October 22nd from 3:45 to 5:45 for the Canton Teachers Reception. The event will take place at LaTrattoria. Further information will be forthcoming.

Mrs. Rhea asked for Board members to try and attend the Alumni Weekend dinner that will be held on October 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School Cafeteria. She also reminded the Board of the upcoming retirement celebration for Lowell Humphrey.

Lastly, Mrs. Rhea asked Board member to plan on attending the Charter Revision meeting especially if they had questions and/or concerns.

Committee Reports

Facilities

Mr. Webb reported that the following projects were completed: CBPS drop off new procedure, the new instructional space behind the stage at CBPS, the computer lab and mobile computer lab at CBPS, and West Field. He informed the Board that the work on the additional parking spaces at CBPS will begin on Monday, September 28th.

Mr. Webb also reported that a six month permit was granted for the scoreboard at the High School. There will be a public hearing needed to grant permanent approval.

Mr. Webb spoke on the following upcoming projects: portable bleachers, outdoor seating at the high school, and a proposed project for the courtyard at Cherry Brook Primary School that would be funded with a grant from Lowes if awarded; and the skinning of a softball field.

Curriculum

Sue Saidel reviewed the minutes of the Curriculum Committee meeting that was held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009.

Board of Education Goal Setting

Superintendent Case facilitated a discussion on Board Goals for the 2009-2010 school year. A preliminary list of goals was developed by Board members. Further discussion will be held at the Board meeting of October 8th.

Adoption of Minutes

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education adopt the minutes of the meeting of September 10, 2009.

Field Trip

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education approve the State Wrestling Tournament from February 19 to February 20, 2010 and the State Open Wrestling Tournament from February 26 to February 2010.

The field trip request for Saltillo, Mexico has been tabled for a future Board meeting pending additional information.

Superintendent Evaluation

MOTION: That the Canton Board of Education accept and approve the Superintendent’s written evaluation for the 2008-2009 school year.
