Director of Disability & Deaf Services
Full Time (40 hours/week)
Agency Summary: San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) is a community-based, anti-sexual assault, social justice organization. We provide support to sexual assault survivors, their families, and communities, and use education and community organizing as tools of prevention. We believe that ending all forms of oppression is integral to ending sexual assault and challenge oppression within our organization and communities. We are women of color-led and prioritize working with and for communities facing multiple forms of violence and oppression.
Disability & Deaf Services Program Summary
SFWAR’s Director of Disability & Deaf Servicesprovides and coordinates the provision of a range of accessible crisis intervention and advocacy services to individuals with physical impairments, individuals who belong to a sensory minority (e.g. those who are blind, Deaf, hard of hearing), individuals with emotional disabilities, individuals with cognitive or intellectual challenges, and those with mental illness or other chronic/severe illnesses (e.g. HIV/AIDS, cancer, etc.). In addition, the program (1) provides dedicated accessible outreach addressing violence and abuse as it impacts the full spectrum of people with disabilities, (2) coordinates specialized intensive training focused on supporting survivors with disabilities, and (3) assesses and ensures agency wide ADA compliance.
Position Summary
The Directorof Disability & Deaf Services directs SFWAR’s newly established Disability & Deaf Services Program. This Director works with the Executive Director, Director of Advocacy & Counseling Services, Survivor Advocates, Director of Volunteers & Hotline, Volunteers & Hotline Associate, certified rape crisis volunteers and interns, contractors, and community partners to develop, implement, manage, and evaluate SFWAR’s Disability & Deaf Services Program. This includes: providing intervention advocacy (i.e. in-person and via phone) and counseling (i.e. individual and group) to survivors with disabilities; developing relevant outreach materials and promotional campaigns to raise awareness of services for individuals with disabilities; coordinating and facilitating training to increase agency competence to provide survivors with disabilities appropriate and accessibleservices; evaluating organizational ADA compliance; and building partnerships with local groups working on behalf of people with disabilities and to further disability justice. The Directorof Disability & Deaf Services is supervised by the Executive Director and supervises one Survivor Advocate, along with rape crisis volunteers and interns who provide counseling and/or intervention advocacy services.
Responsibilities:
Program Management: Coordinate development, implementation and evaluation of Disability & Deaf Services Program, including: annual program planning; program budget development and management; policy and protocol development; supervision of Survivor Advocate, volunteers, and interns; and grant and contract compliance. Prepare narrative and quantitative progress reports and substantiating documentation for funders. Maintain client and services records and perform data-entry. Ensure overall program accessibility and client confidentiality.
24-Hour Hotline: Work with Director of Volunteers & Hotline to plan and conduct trainings and in-services for staff and volunteer Sexual Assault Counselors. Maintain knowledge of a wide array of resources and referrals for clients. Provide counseling on 24-hour hotline.
Advocacy & Accompaniment: Maintain Advocacy schedule, including scheduling off-site advocacy services to enhance accessibility of services.
Individual Counseling: Provide individual counseling to clients. Develop partnerships and negotiate collaborative agreements with therapists who can be referred to clients with disabilities. Provide clients referrals to appropriate resources, including psychotherapy, psychiatric care, somatic therapy and other healing resources.
Support/Healing Groups: Coordinate and manage support/healing groups, including trainings, supervising, and supporting volunteers, interns, and paid contractor Support Group Facilitators.Develop partnerships and negotiate collaborative agreements with social service and community agencies to develop and facilitate community and culturally relevant support/healing groups. Facilitate and/or co-facilitate support/healing groups.
Community Outreach, Networking and Partnership-Building: Develop a wide range of culturally relevant outreach materials (i.e. Braille, large print, etc.) for survivors with disabilities. Implement a city-wide campaign focusing on violence against people with disabilities and available support services for survivors. Participate in community outreach activities to promote services and recruit volunteers. Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with a broad range of social service and community agencies. Attend relevant meetings with community partners.
Training and Technical Assistance:Design and facilitate training/education on supporting the healing of survivors that increases the capacity of social service, public, and community agencies to respond to sexual assault and other forms of abuse as they impacts individuals with disabilities.
Additional Responsibilities: Evaluate agency ADA compliance. Participate in team decision making with Direct Services Team. Participate and/or take leadership in agency-wide activities and committees, as appropriate. Participate in the development and implementation of the agency’s strategic plan. Responsible for own typing, filing, and administrative activities.
Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of experience providing services to people with physical, sensory, cognitive, and/or mental disabilities.
- Experience in program planning, implementation and evaluation of goals and objectives to meet grant/contract compliance.
- Excellent skills in managing, training, and supervising staff and volunteers.
- Excellent skills in developing outreach materials and implementing educational campaigns.
- Excellent public speaking skills.
- Excellent skills in developing partnerships and negotiating collaborative agreements.
- Experience conducting intakes, providing individual peer or clinical counseling and facilitating support groups.
- Experience providing medical, legal, and/or social service advocacy and accompaniment services.
- Experience assessing agency ADA compliance and making recommendations to enhance compliance.
- Familiarity with San Francisco’s criminal justice, medical, and social services systems strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with a variety of sexual trauma healing modalities, including body based forms of healing (e.g. somatics), strongly preferred.
- Understanding of the impact of sexual trauma, violence and oppression on individuals and communities.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team setting.
- Experience in government grant reporting.
- Ability to develop curriculum and facilitate trainings for a wide variety of audiences.
- Knowledge of dynamics of vicarious trauma and ability to support staff and volunteers in self and community care and resilience building.
- Ability to recognize own healing needs and to access support needed.

Salary & Benefits:
- $48,700 year starting salary.

- Annual paid leave for Full Time Employees (pro-rated for Part Time Employees): two weeks vacation for first year of employment; two weeks of sick leave; one week of mental health leave; 3 1/2 days of flexible “holidays”.
