Canal Breaks discounted for May Bank Holiday Weekend

Waterways Holidays, the one-stop-online-shop for booking holidays on Britain’s inland waterways, is tempting couples and families with discounted breaks over the May Bank Holiday weekend with savings of up to £255 on normal hire rates.

“These Bank Holiday offers are brilliant, and a three-night break is a great way for first-timers to discover the beauty, tranquillity and history of the canals,” says managing director of Waterways Holidays, Nigel Richards.

For example, a Princess-class narrowboat based at Acton Bridge in Cheshire sleeps four to six people, and is now offered at £1020, saving £255, for a three-night weekend starting Saturday 5 May. From its base on the Trent and Mersey Canal, an easy weekend break could include the lock-free Bridgewater Canal to the pretty market town of Lymm and leisurely meals at a canal-side pub in Sale Bridge.

At Ely on the River Ouse, a Duchess class boat sleeping up to four is £840, saving £209 on three nights’ hire starting Friday 4 May. Visit the magnificent cathedral before boarding Duchess and being introduced to the boat’s engine, steering and safety features. In a weekend, a quiet cruise to Cambridge is easy, passing through Wicken Fen en route. This wetland nature reserve has been managed by the National Trust since 1899.

And in Scotland, where boaters can see the awesome piece of canal engineering that is the Falkirk Wheel, a Lautrec Class boat sleeping four is offered at £900, saving £225. The Falkirk Wheel compensates for the differing heights of the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals, and raises and lowers boats between the two: an extraordinary experience at the start of a weekend’s cruise that can also take in ‘The Kelpies’ 30 metre high equine sculpture.

These boats all have central heating, well-equipped galley kitchens, dining/seating areas and modern shower rooms with flush wcs. Everything need for self-catering is provided, including bed linen and towels.

All prices quoted include damage waiver charge, car parking while cruising, initial tuition at handover and loan of buoyancy aids. The only extra is fuel used during the weekend.
