Canadian Identity Assignment

Curriculum Outcomes:

Development (D3): Students will be expected to identify those individuals, events and/or symbols that they believe have contributed to the development of Canada and explain their historical significance.

Sovereignty (S5): Analyze the external factors that have impacted on the struggle for Canadian sovereignty.

Culture and Diversity (CGO): Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of culture, diversity, and world view, recognizing the similarities and differences reflected in various personal, cultural, racial and ethnic perspectives.

The Assignment:

Create a poster, collage or some other large visual piece that captures or represents your perspective of Canadian Identity.

What makes us Canadian? What symbols have come to be associated with Canada and its regions? Can you identify and interpret some of the symbols of Canada and its regions? As you create this portrait of Canadian Identity, consider the six major bonds that connect us in our cultural identity as Canadians (our land, our government, our people, our economy, our international relations and our accomplishments as a nation).

You may include drawings, symbols, words, lyrics, people, sayings, etc. Your poster / collage must cover the entire paper.

Also, you must present your poster and be able to explain your visual to the class. Your posters will be displayed as well, so do your best work. Be creative and have fun!
