MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY AND BODY SYSTEMS COURSE (MTBS): Optional science pre-requisite

This course is not mandatory for all applicants, but it is strongly recommended for everyone.

Course Description: This course is designed to prepare students for the pure science components of the Massage Therapy program. By introducing students to anatomical, physiological and pathological terms, a foundational understanding of the meaning behind the common language used by the health professions will be developed. The purpose of learning and building a medical vocabulary is not only to communicate effectively with other members of the health care team, but also to prepare students for success within the Massage Therapy diploma program.

INTRODUCTION TO MASSAGE – Mandatory Pre-Requisite

Course Description: This course is a mandatory practical introduction for applicants enrolling in our Massage Therapy Diploma Program. The work is hands on and encompasses basic health and safety concerns, an introduction to Massage Therapy techniques, and self-care strategies for therapists. It is offered at both the Cambridge and Toronto campus on the following dates in 2018:

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student is expected to:

Be more knowledgeable about Massage Therapy as a potential profession

Be more knowledgeable about the history of Swedish massage

Understand basic terminology and theoretical concepts of therapeutic massage

Be acquainted with, and be able to perform, some basic therapeutic massage techniques

Gain an awareness of the importance of proper body mechanics for the profession

Understand the importance of gaining consent and respecting client boundaries

Be aware of situations when massage is inappropriate or when it is advisable to refer

clients to another professional

All Courses run Saturday and Sunday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please note course times are subject to change based on group needs.

General Information:

 Wear loose, comfortable clothing. No jeans, no boxer shorts, no excessive jewelry.

 Trimmed fingernails are mandatory.

 You will be practicing massage techniques on fellow classmates. Please bring: 2 flat sheets and 2 hand towels. You may be required to disrobe (to your comfort level), keeping undergarments on; a sheet will be used to drape you at all times.

 Lunch break is 30 minutes. No food or drink except water is permitted in the classroom.

1) Course registration cost is $200.00 and must be included with the registration form.

2) Course registration form and payment must be received at least two (2) weeks prior to the start date outlined above. Late registrations may not be accepted if class maximums have been met.

3) Cancellations must be received at least two (2) weeks prior to the start date outlined above in order to be eligible for a refund less a $50.00 cancellation fee.

4) In order to receive a completion certificate, you must be present for the full course and achieve a grade of 70% on the final quiz

5) Anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late will be deferred to the next offering of the course, at no charge (one time only).

6) In the event that illness or injury prevent you from attending the registered course dates, you may defer your registration one time only, to the next available course dates, at no additional charge. A charge of $25 will apply for each additional deferral.
