Canada Test Study Guide 2015

This is a guide to use for studying for the unit test. Not all of these questions will be on the test nor are they worded exactly as they would be on the test. These are concepts that you need to know and understand.

6. Where do most people in Canada live? Within 100 miles of the US border. (Southern Canada)

7. What climate feature keeps most Canadians living in the southern part of their country? The temperature, rainfall, and arable land… Plus, it’s too cold in the north!

8. Which part of Canada has sub-arctic and arctic climates? Northern.

9. Name some important natural resources of Canada. Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, Gold, Iron Ore, Timber, Water, Hydroelectricity.

10. What type of communities are found in areas where mining and farming are important? Small rural Communities.

11. Why is it good for Canada that it has enough oil and natural gas to sell? It saves them money because they have enough to supply themselves, AND make profit on the extras.

12. What condition makes it easy for Canada to trade with the United States? Their location to the immediate north of the United States and the fact that they share such a long border. Also, NAFTA eliminates trade barriers and makes it cheaper.

Hudson Bay and St. Lawrence River connects to Atlantic.

14. How are Canadians able to produce enough food for their own use and still have food to sell to other countries when only 5 percent of the land is arable?

With a country of Canada’s size, 5% is a large number.

SS6G7a Explain the major environmental concerns of Canada regarding acid rain and pollution of the Great Lakes, the extraction and use of natural resources on the Canadian Shield, and timber resources.

15. What substances does rain mix with to become acidic? Nitrogen Oxide and Sulfur Monoxide.

16. Name some sources of chemicals in acid rain. Car/factory/truck exhaust smoke.

17. Why does Canada have to work with the United States to solve the problem of acid rain? To clean up the Great Lakes? 50-75% of Canada’s Acid rain is due to pollution coming across the border from the US.

The Canadians and the US share access to the great lakes so both are responsible for the pollution found in the lakes.

18. Where in Canada are the most valuable minerals found? The Canadian Shield.

19. Why is the Canadian Shield important to the economy of Canada? The minerals and timber found here make up for many of the jobs and industries of Canada.

20. What is a problem related to clear-cutting? Clear cutting causes erosion to happen easier, destroys habitats of animals, and also the machinery used sends pollution into the air.

25. What is the most common religion in Quebec? Christianity- Roman Catholicism.

26. What was allowed for Canada by the British North America Act of 1867? It put together the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec, and the new constitution named the country the Dominion of Canada. The newly created “Canada” was allowed to have its own parliament and prime minister. It was not allowed to make treaties with other countries, and it had to be a part of the United Kingdom military. The monarch would be the same for the UK and Canada

28. What is the goal of the independence movement of Quebec? The goal is for Quebec to secede and become independent so that the French descendants can protect their culture, heritage, language, and religion.
