Canada Power Point Research Project

Have you ever thought you could teach a class better than the teacher? Maybe you’ve had ideas on how to make Power Point presentations more exciting or easier to understand. Well, here is your chance! You and a partner will be creating a Power Point presentation for our Canada Unit which you will use to teach the information to the class. Since you guys are now the teachers, you will have to come up with the best way to present the material from our standards. However, to help you organize the information, I have provided you with some guidelines to follow.

You will have access to school computers for 6 days. This project is due on ______

How should I organize my time?

1 day to brainstorm with your partner and create a plan to accomplish the project

2 days for research (some research may need to be conducted at home)

2 days to create Power Point

1 day to revise and perfect your work

Requirements:

  1. Each slide should have a title including the standard being addressed ex. SS6G6a. (You do not need to write out the entire standard )
  2. The ppt should be between 10-20 slides.
  3. Slides must follow the order of the standards listed on this sheet
  4. Information must be put into your own words. No “copying and pasting” allowed.
  5. Each slide should have no more than 5 bullets with 10-15 words per bullet.

Remember, you will be explaining the information to the class, not reading from the ppt. Therefore, the bullets should be the main points and you will fill in the details as you present to the class. This means you have to understand the information not just regurgitate it to the class.

  1. Pictures on your power point should be used to enhance student learning. For example, when teaching about Canada’s geography, you reference a map. You should have at least 10 pictures on your presentation.
  2. The last slide of your Power Point will be your list of sources. For websites, you only need to list the URL. Tip: keep a word document open as you are doing your research and copy and paste the website URLs as you go!Wikipedia is not a valid source!
  3. You will need to turn in your rubric on the day of your presentation.
  4. Each person will need to bring a flash drive to save your work! You are responsible for having access to your project at all times, even if your partner is absent. If you are unable to get a flash drive, let me know immediately.

Your power point must address each of the following Georgia Performance Standards:

1. SS6G6 The student will explain the impact of location, climate, distribution of natural resources, and population distribution on Canada.

a. Describe how Canada’s location, climate, and natural resources have affected where people live.

b. Describe how Canada’s location, climate, and natural resources impact trade.

When addressing this standard, be able to explain the following to the class:

  • How Canada’s location and climate have affected trade and where people live
  • Why most Canadians live in the Southern part of Canada
  • How permafrost in the north is a serious obstacle to development
  • How Canada’s natural resources have affected trade and where people live
  • How Canada’s proximity (location) to the U.S. affects Canada’s trade and economy.
  • How Canada’s location near major bodies of water encourages trade.

For example, to address this standard you could have one slide for location with a map of Canada and some basic facts about its location. Then you can explain to the class how the location benefits or hinders trade. The second slide may represent climate. Again, you would have bullets with the basic points about Canada’s climate and then discuss how this affects where people live in the country, etc. ****This is just an example of how to organize information. You have the freedom to organize the information however you want****

2. SS6G7 The student will discuss environmental issues in Canada.

  1. Explain the major environmental concerns of Canada regarding acid rain and pollution of the Great Lakes, the extraction and use of natural resources on the Canadian Shield, and timber resources.

When addressing this standard, be able to explain or describe the following:

  • How acid rain and pollution have severely affected the Great Lakes
  • The causes of this pollution, the consequences of this pollution to the environment, wildlife, and humans.
  • The issues pollution has caused with neighboring U.S.
  • The concerns associated with the extraction and use of natural resources on the Canadian Shield and timber resources

3. SS6H4 The student will describe the impact of European contact on Canada.

a. Describe the influence of the French and the English on the language and religion of Canada.

b. Explain how Canada became an independent nation.

4. SS6H5 The student will analyze important contemporary issues in Canada.

a. Describe Quebec’s independence movement.

5. SS6CG3 The student will explain the structure of the national government of Canada.

a. Describe the structure of the Canadian government as a constitutional monarchy, a parliamentary democracy, and a federation, distinguishing the role of the citizen in terms of voting and personal freedoms.

  • Who is the head of government, chief of state
  • How is the government structured (system, type)?
  • How does the leader come to power?

6. SS6E2c. Explain the functions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)

  • Have a basic understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of NAFTA.
