Can You Survive?
You andpartner(s) have just been informed by a reliable source that all major cities in the U.S. will be attacked with nuclear weaponry within the next 72 hours. You must prepare as best you can for this catastrophe and make a plan on how you will handle the ramifications of this tragedy once it does happen.
Your team will be presenting aPowerPointBlock Day- April 29 or 30for a test grade. This presentation will include research you have done as well as decisions you have made about what you will and what you won’t do during this tragic event. Each one of the components listed below will be on a slide and you will present with your partner(s) on the due date.
You live in a small town. You will not be attacked directly; however, you will lose power and all animals and plants that are unprotected will be affected with fallout/radiation. There are roughly 2,000 people in your town. You are landlocked, but you do have a small river running through the center of the community.
You only have access to the following stores and businesses…
Wal-Mart
Academy
H.E.B. (with a pharmacy)
A small clinic with two doctors and five nurses on staff
Part One: Before the Blast
1)You must first create a slide that has the name of your town (which you will make up) and a picture from the internet of what your town might look like. You decide what state you live in; however, you cannot choose a town that already exists. Remember that you can’t be on the ocean or by a lake; you are landlocked but have access to a small river. Be sure to document the photo you use on your work cited slide.
2)You and your group must decide where you are going to shop and what you are going to purchase. You only have access to the stores listed above and the internet. In your list, you must include where you plan on purchasing each item, the cost of the item (based on research or a close estimate) and the quantity. (An Excel document might be helpful!) You have a $5,000 budget. If you order anything online, it must be overnighted and you have to factor the shipping costs into your budget. You also need to make a list of any necessities you already own. This inventory will greatly aid you once the bombs go off. Keep in mind that there are laws about owning weapons, legal ages to buy particular products, prescriptions are needed for certain medications, etc.
3)You must decide who else you are going to inform about the attack. Imagine that all of you have the same family and friends in the area that you have now. Are you going to inform them of what is about to happen, risking mass hysteria from the town, or are you going to keep this apocalypse a secret? If you plan on telling anyone, make a list to include in your PowerPoint. If you plan on keeping it a secret, include that as well, along with why you made that choice. Where do you plan on living? That also will be decided on this slide. Figure out whose home you will be sharing during this catastrophe.
4)As a team you have time to swing by the library to do some research on what to expect from a nuclear attack. In your presentation you must include at leasttwo slidesof research that you found significant and applicable to what your town will soon be experiencing. Specifically focus on the following: Effects of fallout/radiation the human body, plants and animals. What is fallout and radiation? What can be done to protect yourself? DO NOT COPY AND PASTE! NO WIKIPEDIA! This should be in your own words.
5)Finally, before the blast hits, you need to decide a basic plan of action that you will institute once the bomb drops. How are you going to handle the mass panic? How are you going to handle any injuries and/or radiation exposure? How are you going to handle the looting and pillaging that is bound to take place? Keep in mind that all electricity will be dead, which includes cell towers.
Part Two: After the Blast
Now that the bomb has dropped and the initial shock has started to calm down, you and your team have a lot of work to do. Due to the preparedness you exhibited during the first few critical hours after the attacks, the town is looking to you for advice on a lot of different issues.
6)How is your government going to work? Imagine that the acting president has announced that all towns and cities still standing need to create their own functioning governments for the time being. Is your town going to be based on a dictatorship? Monarchy? Theocracy? Democracy? Research at least three the different options, present each one in your PowerPoint and then make your choice.
7)How will you handle criminal behavior? Come up with a plan on how your will deal with people who are looting, robbing, killing, etc. Will martial law be in effect (You might need to research what martial law is!) or will you have some sort of court system set up?
8)You find out that the attack came from one of fiveplaces: Iran, China, North Korea, Pakistan, or Russia. Choose one of the five and do a little bit of research (1-2 slides) about why they would possibly attack us.
9)How will townspeople be informed of critical information, new developments, new laws, etc? Come up with a communication system that will be able to inform everyone in the area of important news and events. Remember, you don’t have electricity.
10)Finally, you need to have a slide for your work cited. Every website used must be documented with the correct MLA format. You need at least SEVEN reputablesources for this project. TWO of these sites need to be from the school’s databases. Remember to document anypictures as well.
There are 10 components to this project. Check the rubric for the point values of each component. Keep in mind that at the end of the project you will be evaluating each other and how everyone in your group worked. We will be voting after the presentations to see which group has the best survival skills. Good luck!
