5.Teaching/Learning Strategies
a)Activity
First Session
  1. Hook: Bring children to art area and ask students to spend 2 minutes viewing the painting quietly. Read page 10 of “Rousseau Art Activity Pack” regarding the painting to the students.
  2. Art critique
  • Description: Think aloud: “I wonder if this is real? The woman is fast asleep, and the lion looks calm and curious. What do you think is happening in this painting?” What time of day do you think it is? Where do you think this is taking place? What are the clues? The lion gives us a clue. Do lions live in Canada? Do you see any trees in this painting? What kind of place has no trees? I wonder if the artist actually saw this happening? Take three or four minutes for students to share dreams with the group.
  • Analysis of colour and space: The bright in the gypsy’s dress brings the viewer’s attention to the woman. She is obviously the subject of the painting. The sky takes up half of the painting (half of the space).
  • Interpretation: Ask students if they have any ideas why Rousseau might have painted ‘The Sleeping Gypsy’.
  • Judgment: Ask students whether or not they like this painting, and why. If the painting was for sale, and you could afford it, is it one that you might buy? How much would you pay for it?
Second Session
  1. Hook: View Exotic Landscape and other paintings by Rousseau.
  2. Painting Studio:
  • Complete blue and yellow portions of the colour wheel.
  • Demonstrate mixing of primary colours of blue and yellow to make green.
  • Introduce shades and tones using black and white tempera paint.
  • Introduce sponge and stamp techniques.
  • Using the different shades of green, create a jungle with many leaves as in the Rousseau paintings.
  • Use a variety of brushes and art materials such as stamps and sponges for leaves.

  • Cut out animals from National Geographic.
  • Pasteanimals onto painting.
