Apocrypha: Inter-testament Writings

There are several reasons the Apocrypha was not added. The Apocrypha was officially adopted by the Roman Catholic Church at the Council of Trent in 1545 A.D. The Apocrypha is a combination of some fourteen books that are uninspired and are not in harmony with the scriptures. The following are examples:

Suicide is considered as an honorable virtue in II Maccabees 14:41-43. “Now as the multitude sought to rush into his house and to break open the door and to set fire to it, when he was ready to be taken, he struck himself with his sword; choosing to die nobly rather than to fall into the hands of the wicked and to suffer abuses unbecoming his noble birth. But whereas through haste he missed of giving himself a sure wound, and the crowd was breaking into the doors, he ran boldly to the wall and manfully threw himself down to the crowd.”

Second, in Tobias 6:5-8, Tobias asked the angel Azarias the remedies to get rid of the Devil. The angel answering said, “If thou put a little piece of its (the fish’s) heart upon the coals, the smoke thereof driveth away all kinds of devils, either from man or woman, so that they come no more to them.”

Third, in Tobias 5:15-19, angels are described as having families. “Azarias is the son of the great Ananias. And Tobias answered; Thou art a great family.”

Fourth, in Tobias 12:8-9, salvation can be obtained by giving alms. “Prayer is good with fasting and alms more than to lay up treasures of gold. For alms delivereth from death, and the same is that which purgeth away sins, and maketh to find mercy and life everlasting.”

Fifth, Judith 8:5-6, is the basis for Catholicism’s teaching of the secrecy of the nunnery as the holiest service a girl can offer to Christ.

Sixth, Judith 9:2, describes murder as honorable as long as it will advance the cause of the righteous.

Seventh, Wisdom 3:1-4, teaches that souls in Hell can hope to get out.

Eighth, the Apocrypha has added two chapters to the book of Daniel with a story of lust in the attempted seduction of a pretty woman named Susanna by two unnamed elders of Israel.

Ninth, in Daniel 14:32-36, the Apocrypha claims that Daniel killed a “dragon” worshipped as a god of the Babylonians.

Tenth, II Maccabees 12:43-46 teaches that men in hell may be pardoned

or released from suffering by prayers of priests who are paid special fees. According to this, the rich man in Luke 16:19-31 could have bought his way out of hell. Ed Smith
