Planning a webpage for a client

Instructions and answers for tutors

These instructions cover the learner activity section which can be found on page 4. This Lesson Element supports Cambridge NationalsLevel 1/2in Creative iMedia.

When distributing the activity section to the learners either as a printed copy or as a Word file you will need to remove the tutor instructions section.

Suggested timing

  • Activity 1: 15 - 20 minutes
  • Activity 2: 15 - 20 minutes
  • Activity 3: 45 - 60 minutes

Teacher InstructionsActivity 1

Learners could create a mood board for the client. This should be based on the client brief below.The mood board should be reflective of the target audience and the purpose of the website.

Learners will need the following resources:

•A large sheet of paper or card.

•A collection of magazines and papers.

•Access to the computer or an image library.

•Scissors and a glue stick.

The client: / U-Send Couriers.
The Business: / The company delivers parcels and packages across the UK.
The Target Audience: / Domestic customers aged 18+, particularly people who sell and send things via online auction sites.
Company Slogan: / ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff: U-Send it!”
Information / The company prides itself on being cheaper than other couriers for small items, and offers a guaranteed next day delivery service for items weighing less the 2kg.

Teacher Instructions Activity 2

The learners could create a mind map to represent the target audience of the website in Activity 1. This should cover key areas such as: income, gender, accessibility, ethnicity, etc.

This is designed to help learners to create an appropriate visualisation for the planned website.

Learners are provided with the following diagram.

Learners could create an appropriate visualisation diagram for the planned website homepage. Elements should be labelled and justified within this visualisation such as: accessibility features, images (size, resolution, etc.), multimedia elements, links (internal and external), navigation, written content, colour schemes, etc.

Learners will need the following resources:

•Pens.

•Pencils.

•Coloured pencils.

•Other appropriate stationery.

Activity 1

Learner Activity

You are working as a website designer for a local company and have been asked to plan a website for a new company. The details are below:

The client: / U-Send Couriers.
The Business: / The company delivers parcels and packages across the UK.
The Target Audience: / Domestic customers aged 18+, particularly people who sell and send things via online auction sites.
Company Slogan: / ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff: U-Send it!”
Information / The company prides itself on being cheaper than other couriers for small items, and offers a guaranteed next day delivery service for items weighing less the 2kg.

Working on your own or in a group, create a mood board using assets collected from different sources.

You will need the following resources:

  • A large sheet of paper or card.
  • A collection of magazines and papers.
  • Access to the computer or an image library.
  • Scissors and a glue stick.

What to do:

  • Look through magazines for pictures which are suitable for your theme.
  • Cut out the pictures.
  • Browse the web or an image library for royalty free/copyright free pictures and information.
  • Print out the images.
  • Stick the images onto the paper.

This does not need to be by hand, you could create your mood board electronically if you’d prefer.

Now you have identified the theme of your website you’re going to think more closely about your target audience. Using the diagram below, create a profile for your target audience.

Activity 3

Working on your own, create a visualisation diagram for the website’s homepage.

You will need the following resources:

•Pens.

•Pencils.

•Coloured pencils.

•Other appropriate stationery.

What to do:

•Plan the layout of key elements such as banner, buttons, etc.

•Include a colour scheme.

•Plan multimedia and accessibility features.

Annotate your design to justify your decisions thinking about the client requirements and the target audience.
