Position summary:

The Minister of Music at Calvary Baptist Church shall be a person of faith who has experienced a call by God to minister to a congregation through music. They shall possess a level of spiritual maturity that would inform their leadership in all facets of their ministry. They shall have an awareness that the music of the church will have a great impact on the life of the church in worship, discipleship, devotion, mission, and service. They shall oversee, care for, and be the resource for all areas of music for the church. They shall plan and lead all other music related activities including, but not limited to, Sanctuary Choir, children’s music and other ensembles as needed. The Minister of Music will also be responsible for maintaining all music equipment and supplies.

Task:

·  They shall, in consultation with the pastor, plan and lead music worship; to include hymns, choral and other vocal or instrumental music for Sunday Worship. They shall have knowledge and be comfortable with the liturgical calendar and all related aspects of liturgical worship.

·  They shall work with other musicians, including the organist to make sure that the instrumental music is appropriate for their place in worship.

·  Provide the Administrative Assistant with all music information for the Sunday bulletin in a timely fashion.

·  Direct the Sanctuary Choir; arrange for, and direct other vocal and instrumental music as needed at the Sunday morning service.

·  Plan and lead weekly choir rehearsals for the Sanctuary Choir and other ensembles as assigned.

·  Be responsible for the selection and ordering of all music and music supplies, as well as the securing of guest musicians.

·  Maintain the choral, hand bell, and instrumental music library computer database and keep all music filed in an orderly fashion.

·  Maintain all music areas at the church in a neat and orderly fashion, including the Music Office, rehearsal rooms, choir loft and storage areas.

·  Arrange for the regular care and upkeep of all the church’s musical instruments, including but not limited to the sanctuary pipe organ, all pianos, and hand bells.

·  Prepare a yearly operating budget for the Music Ministry in consultation with the pastor. Monitor the Music Fund and all music related expenses throughout the year.

·  Work in partnership with the Music and Worship Committee to plan and execute special music worship services and events. Additionally, consult and work with the sound and video technicians for all music needs as required.

·  Attend staff meetings as scheduled. Attend Church Council and Worship and Music Committee meetings as scheduled, and upon reasonable notice, attend other committee meetings as may be necessary.

·  Prepare a yearly report of Music Ministry activities for the church’s Book of Reports.

·  Be the contact person for all visiting music groups/organizations who have requested the use of Calvary’s facilities. Provide Administrative Assistant with required insurance documents. If applicable, insure that fees are collected and given to the Administrative Assistant.

·  Help plan and provide music for weddings and funerals as requested/availability permits. Additional compensation (to be determined by the pastor) will be provided from the person(s) making the request.

Skills:

·  Have a high level of artistry and proficiency in choral and instrumental directing, with knowledge of directing small choirs.

·  Be comfortable with a wide mix of musical styles including but not limited to traditional hymns, spirituals, gospel, classical church choir repertoire and contemporary world music.

·  Work collegially with church staff and volunteers, be self-motivated and have an understanding of the importance of music in the church’s worship and ministry.

Experience and Education:

A college degree in music or equivalent experience is required. Must have knowledge of choral conducting, healthy vocal production for adults and children and repertoire for all of the above.
