Successful Year Six Visit to London

Baroness Richardson of Calow had extended an invitation to pupils of Calow Primary

to visit her at the House of Lords. Year Six pupils journeyed down to London for the

day to be received by the Baroness at the Palace of Westminster. Pupils got the

chance to talk with Black Rod before witnessing three new Peers being introduced to

the House of Lords. Pupils then spent time listening to debate in the Lords and

Commons.

Year Six pupils went on to a special exhibition at the British Museum that focused on

the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. There was time to examine closely a range

of other Ancient Egyptian artefacts including the famous Rosetta Stone, which decoded

hieroglyphics. All the children agreed it was a wonderful visit that enabled them to have

insight in to the workings of Parliament, as well as learn lots of interesting facts about Ancient Egypt. Pictured are some of the children admiring one of the Ancient Egyptian exhibits. Photographs are available on the Parents’ Interest Space of Kaleidos.

Pole Star Planetarium visits Calow Primary

All children from Classes Two to Six inclusive will be experiencing the Pole Star Planetarium when it comes to School on 8th February. The Planetarium is an inflatable dome capable of holding up to 40 children at a time and has specialist projectors creating a 360 degrees hemispherical image of the night sky. This will provide an exciting opportunity for the children to ‘explore’ the cosmos from the safety of the dome! Of course, the experience will be linked to the Science curriculum.

World ‘Thinking Day’

‘Thinking Day’ on 22nd February commemorates the birth of the founder of Scouting Robert Baden-Powell. On that day those involved in Scouting or Guiding are asked to go to school in their cub or brownie uniform. For the past few years we have commemorated ‘Thinking Day’. If your child is in Beavers, Rainbows, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts or Guides it would be wonderful if they could wear their uniform at School for the day on 17th February, as we’re not at School on the 22nd (or morning only and change at lunch-time if they wish to keep their uniform clean!) We hope they will support this event by taking part so we can celebrate Scouting and Guiding as a worldwide movement as a whole.

Parent Questionnaire Feedback on Scooter Smart Training

Thank you to the 26 parents who returned questionnaire responses. There were many positive comments including: “excellent idea; a fantastic idea, well done to whoever thought of it.” 22 parents agreed that Scooter Day made a difference to how their child uses their scooter and wanted more practice at School. Responses are being shared with Derbyshire County Council in the hope we can secure more Scooter Smart training and for other classes too. You may have noticed that an article about our children taking part in Scooter Smart training was featured in a recent edition of ‘The Derbyshire Times’.

Royal Wedding Public Holiday

You will be aware that Prince William and Kate Middleton are to marry on 29th April and this date has been declared a public holiday. However, for schools the public holiday falls within Easter. Notification from Derbyshire County Council has been sent to all schools advising that the 22nd July should be used as an additional day in lieu of the public holiday for the Royal Wedding. Calow Primary will break up for the summer holidays at home-time on THURSDAY 21st July.
