Calligraphy

Calligraphyis a hands on course designed to expose students to the variety and development of writing.

Advanced Calligraphyis a deeper exploration and better understanding of alphabets and a student’s individual interests related to the art of writing and lettering. Projects reflect higher complexity and skill level.

Course goals and objectives

Students will become familiar with the basic materials and alphabets used to create calligraphy. Students will study examples, practice strokes and learn multiple fonts. They will execute in their own unique style.

Students will be able to use and understand the different brushes and pens used to letter.

Students will understand and be able to do spacing.

Students will create a variety of lettering projects from multiple cultures and disciplines.

Connections

Students will participate in art shows and will be expected to treat themselves; peers, materials, teachers and the ceramics room with respect. They will learn valuable life and career skills while working in groups or individually, solving complex problems as a community, and working towards personal growth and artistic expression.

Course Topics and Units

  • Due to the creative nature of arts and student-centered planning, projects may vary from year to year.
  • Introduction to the history and materials used to write.
  • Studying the development of inks.
  • Understanding how different tools and tips create different writing effects and results.
  • Learning and understanding how to draw lines and create space.
  • Introduction to Chinese calligraphy and Sumi-é.
  • Studying Gothic, Italic and Celtic alphabets and executing then developing an original variation.
  • Understanding the use of different mediums for substrates for lettering.
  • Students will understand Gouache, watercolor and know how to manipulate them for desire effects.
  • Students will create 3D designs based on their names.
  • Grading Criteria- 100 Points

Rationale / Preparation for project and correct labeling of work. / Students have appropriate behavior in class and for materials while maintaining a clean workspace. / Project is creative and reflects the student’s own individual technique. / Student understood & accomplished the correct use of materials / Artwork is inline with project criteria, is well organized, neat & thoughtfully executed.

There will be a midterm Project and final Project. 1-2 homework assignments per quarter.

Extra help available during days with open art room lunch period & by 24 hour notice appointment.

Calligraphy & Advanced Calligraphy Contract

Come to class on time, be ready to listen/start as the bell rings.

No talking during lectures, demonstrations or presentations.Listen, watch, and follow directions.

Be prepared for class (any requested materials or Homework).

Proper use and clean up of materials. Abuse of materials will result in automatic detention and parental contact.

Have all due assignments completed by the end of each quarter.Utilize class time efficiently!!!!!!!!! Extra Help is available.

Class participation is an integral part of your grade.

Remember: I don’t give you detention……….. you earn that for yourself. Immediately with a major infraction by not adhering to the classroom rules, or eventually by earning 3 strikes due to a collection of minor infractions. Every quarter cleans the slate for strikes. A strike is like a reminder.
