FNESC 20th Annual Conference on Aboriginal Education, Vancouver, December 4-6, 2014

Workshop Description

Workshop Title:

Strengthening Our Roots and Closing the Education Gap

Workshop Description: Please provide a short description suitable for a conference program, including details of how your workshop complements the conference theme, 20 Years: Transforming Education.

Conference Program Description

Tosh Southwick, a Kluane First Nation citizen and Roberta Hager, a First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun citizen, are truly leaders in education in the Yukon Territory. Tosh and Roberta are both Co-Chairs to the First Nation Education Commission and are also members of a Joint Education Action Plan Working Group in the Yukon. Tosh is the Director of First Nation Initiatives at Yukon College and Roberta is the Education Manager for the First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun.

Tosh and Roberta will share their journey to tell the story of how Yukon First Nations (YFN) are working together to advance and improve the outcomes for First Nation learners. The workshop will provide an overview of the development and the main components of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding on Education Partnerships between YFNs, Yukon and Canada; the development of a YFN Joint Education Action Plan endorsed by FN Leadership in March of 2013 and the re-establishment of the First Nation Education Commission (FNEC) in April of 2013.

This presentation will also provide First Nation perspectives on the history of YFN education; the rationale for change and transformation of education and the successes and challenges in advancing First Nations education in the Yukon. The workshop will include a story on how the parties are working collaboratively towards a YFN Student Success: How Are We Doing Report (K-12) that will report out on western and First Nation data sets including data on performance indicators from both worlds. The Student Success report will support First Nations in moving forward with data driven and evidence based programming for academic achievement, cultural competency and traditional language fluency. This report is based on best practises from First Nations people in British Columbia and reflects the process involved in defining the concepts, philosophy and definitions of student success from a First Nation perspective. A short video on First Nation perspectives on student success produced by students will also be shared with participants.

Participants will be requested to provide e-mails to receive copies of presentation materials as a means of receiving information but also as a way to preserve our trees.
