16th Annual Conference of the

Production and Operations Management Society

April 29 to May 2, 2005

POM-2005, the sixteenth annual conference of the Production and Operations Management Society, will convene in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. from Friday, April 29 through Monday, May 2, 2005. Friday, April 29 will be devoted to workshops and some special activities while the remaining three days (Saturday, April 30 through Monday, May 2) will be devoted to plenary addresses, contributed and invited papers, and several special activities.

The theme of the conference is Operations Management Frontiers: Winds of Change. This theme recognizes that significant changes are occurring in the environment that companies are operating in. There is a need to examine what world-class companies are doing to stay on the frontier in providing value to customers. This theme also reflects the geography of the location of the conference.

Conference Venue: The conference will be held at the InterContinental Chicago Hotel, 505 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60601. Located in the heart of Chicago on the famed “Magnificent Mile,” the InterContinental Chicago is one of the city’s most luxurious hotels and landmarks. Plenary Speakers: We have exciting industry and academic leaders to address the critical issues at the conference. These sessions will almost certainly draw business leaders from the Chicago area to our conference.


Contributed Papers: Papers on all topics related to teaching, research, and practice of POM are invited. Preliminary topics include, but are not limited to: Global Supply Chain Management; Secure Supply Chains; Purchasing and Materials Management; Logistics and Distribution; Operations Strategy; Global Operations; Operations Frontiers; Performance Measurement; Internet-Enabled Operations; Enterprise Resource Planning; Product and Process Design; Service Operations Management; Quality Management and Six Sigma; Continuous Improvement; Mass Customization; Operations Flexibility; Innovation in Teaching; Operations Planning, Scheduling and Control; Toyota Production System; Lean Operations; Inventory Management; Mathematical/Software Tools for Operations; OM applications in health care; Environmental Management.

Doctoral Student Consortium: The Doctoral Student Consortium provides an excellent opportunity for career development and networking with prominent academicians and practitioners. Application information will be available on the POMS website http://www.poms.org beginning November 1, 2004.

Emerging Scholars Program: This program was a huge success in our inaugural session at our 2004 World Conference. The focus of this session is on junior faculty and will consist of a set of guided discussions on topics related with academic career building in Operations Management led by some of the most noted names in the field. Application information will be available on the POMS website http://www.poms.org beginning November 1, 2004.

Wickham Skinner Award: POM will continue to offer the Wickham Skinner Award to recognize excellence in contributions to the POM field. Details of the awards will be available on the POMS website http://www.poms.org beginning November 30, 2004.

Abstract Submission: The deadline for submissions of abstracts is December 10, 2004. All abstracts must be submitted via the POMS website http://www.poms.org. The website will be available for submitting abstracts beginning October 15, 2004. Abstracts should be limited to 150 words. (In addition to abstracts, participants may also submit papers to be published in the electronic proceedings of the conference. Papers must be submitted to the POMS website http://www.poms.org by January 31, 2005.)

Hotel Room Rates: Special room rates have been worked out with the InterContinental Chicago. These special rates are $166.00 (single/double), $186.00 (triple) and $206.00 (quad). A limited number of suites are available with rates starting at $375/night. Hotel registration details will be provided by September 30, 2004 on the POMS website http://www.poms.org.


Conference Registration: All registration for the conference will be done on line through the POMS website http://www.poms.org. The website will be available for registration beginning December 15, 2004 and close on April 15, 2005. The registration fees are as follows:

Members: $350 by January 15, $375 between January 16 and February 15, $450 between February 16 and April 15. The on site registration fee is $500.

Non-Members: $375 by January 15, $400 between January 16 and February 15, $475 between February 16 and April 15. The on site registration fee is $500.

Students and Retirees: $95 by January 15, $115 between January 16 and February 15, $135 between February 16 and April 15. The on site registration fee is $150.

Message from the Planning Team: The POM-2005 planning team is working very hard in putting together an exciting program. Our goal is to put together a program that would appeal to anyone interested in improving his/her research productivity, bringing the latest materials to the classroom, or using the latest OM techniques/software in solving OM problems.
