Policy:
It is policy that the Charter is committed to being a high performance school, focused on outstanding student performance, achievement, and preparation for a lifetime of success. Professional appearance of our staff members includes dress, accessories, body adornments, and grooming. Appropriate professional appearance not only reinforces a shared-vision of the Charter and the teachers’ identity as highly motivated professionals working toward a common mission and self-worth but, also, strengthens the community’s attitude toward the Charter and the teaching profession in general, as well as the conduct, morale, and performance of the Charter’s students. This policy applies to all locations where a staff member performs his/her duties.
Staff, including administrative staff and teachers, must exercise good judgment in their choice of professional appearance for work or work-related activities by always appearing in a manner:
a. That must be appropriate to the situation,
b. That must invoke a positive impression from the community,
c. That must provide appropriate role modeling for students,
d. That must promote a working and learning environment that is free from unnecessary disruption, and
e. That must be conducive to high student and staff performance.
During the work day and any time employees attend work-related activities, employees shall appear in appropriate dress. Employees are expected to wear clothing appropriate for the nature of our business and the type of work performed. Clothing should be neat, clean and tasteful. Avoid clothing that can create a safety hazard Examples of professional attire include, but are not limited to, collared shirts, dress slacks/ khakis, dress coordinates, dresses, and blazers.
Undergarments must be worn at all times with any style of outfit. Hair must be clean and neat in appearance. Shoes must be clean and polished. Mustaches, beards, and sideburns are permitted if neatly trimmed and reasonable in length. Cologne or perfumes should be used in moderation with consideration of others.
Items that are not acceptable in the workplace include, but are not limited to, the following:
f. Attire that is prohibited in the student dress code
g. Jogging shorts / running shorts, “cut-off” shorts (or any shorts or other similar article of clothing shorter than mid-thigh)
h. Clothing with rips, holes or tears
i. Sunglasses and / or baseball hats (inside the building)
j. Casual wear such as blue/ colored jeans, corduroy pants
k. Tennis or athletic style shoes, rubber shoe thongs (“flip-flops”), platform shoes or bedroom slippers
l. Athletic wear, such as jogging suits (except for physical education teachers while teaching PE or special events when appropriate)
m. Skirts and dresses shorter than mid-thigh
n. Sundresses with bare backs and / or shoulders
o. Underwear as outerwear
p. Inappropriately sheer, tight, or short clothing; pants not worn at the appropriate height hip or waste level (apparel worn low or sagging)
q. Garments that inappropriately bare or expose traditionally private parts of the body including, but not limited to, the stomach, buttocks, back and breasts (i.e. “midriffs”, halter tops, backless clothing, garments made of fishnet, mesh or similar material, tank tops, “muscle” tops, etc.)
r. Any clothing, paraphernalia, grooming, jewelry, hair coloring, accessories, or body adornments that contain advertisement, symbols, words, slogans, patches, or pictures that are sexually suggestive; that are drug, tobacco, or alcohol-related or that are obscene, profane, vulgar, lewd, indecent, or plainly offensive
s. Any clothing, paraphernalia, grooming, jewelry, accessories, or body adornments that are in any way disruptive or potentially disruptive to the learning environment or that pose a threat or potential threat to the safety or welfare of the employee or any other person
t. Any other similarly inappropriate clothing, accessory, body adornment, etc., or inappropriate grooming or hygiene.
Warehouse
Warehouse staff members shall follow the above dress code as well as one appropriate for the job position except when duties dictate otherwise. Clothing must not only meet the standards for a professional environment, but also protect the staff member during the normal course of duty, guard against weather conditions, and avoid unnecessary risk of injury.
Examples of warehouse attire include: but are not limited to:
a. long/ short sleeved shirts
b. shorts, jeans, khakis style pants
c. closed toe shoes that have a solid durable sole
d. cold weather attire that does not restrict movement or impose a safety risk.
Warehouse staff members are advised to wear clothing in layers so as to allow for easy adjustment when the temperature changes throughout the workday.
The Administration bears the responsibility for ensuring compliance with this policy and are expected to counsel employees whom they supervise on professional appearance in conformance with the policy and these related procedures.
Any violators of these standards will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.
