CALL FOR CREATIVE WRITERS WORKSHOP

“AFRICAN RITUALS, FOLKLORE AND STORYTELLING”

Ever since its inception Bayimba has organized a range of workshops that aimat introducing artists to new arts disciplines, developing their artistic skills and promoting original art productions. To further promote original art production based on African traditions, Bayimba organises a Creative Writers workshop that specifically focuses on using elements ofAfrican rituals, folklore and storytelling in writing and performance to the public.

The next Creative Writers workshopis scheduled to take place from 1stto 18thSeptember 2014at the National Theatre and will bring together ten (10) selected writersthat will be trained in creative writing for performance based on African rituals, folklore and storytelling. The results of the workshop will be showcased at the Bayimba International Festival of the Arts that is scheduled from 19th to 21st September 2014.

The workshop will be facilitated by Deborah Asiimwe, Specialist with Sundance Institute East Africa. She is an award-winningplaywright and performer. Her recent plays include Forgotten World, Cooking Oil, Appointment with gOD and Un-entitled, which all have receivedproductions or staged readings in the United States. Lagoma is Searching, You are the Man and My Secret all received productions in Uganda. Deborah is a 2006 recipient of a scholarship of merit in Writing for Performance from the California Institute of the Arts where she graduated with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. Asiimwe is alsoa recipient of the Theatre Communications Group(TCG) 10thcycle New Generations future leadersgrant.

Bayimba is now accepting applications from Ugandan writers – incl. playwrights, poets, song writers, short story writers, and writers for screenand slam poets – to participate in this Creative Writers workshop. Participants must be open to collaborate, share skills and learn from others. Selected participants are required to fully commit themselves to be present during the entire duration of the workshop.
