CALL FOR APPLICATIONS : ONE (1) GRANT FOR THE FREE
PARTICIPATION IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE METROPOLIS 2014
The Humanitas Research Hospital (Milan, Italy - offers one (1) grant for a Ph.D. candidate or a young researcher in health studies enrolled in a University of a developing country/African country, for the participation in the International Metropolis Conference 2014 to be held in Milan from November, 3rd to November, 7th, 2014 (
METROPOLIS
The International Metropolis Project ( was launched in 1995 upon a joint initiative of The U.S. Carnegie Foundation and the Canadian Government. In 1998-1999, the ISMU Foundation became responsible of the European secretariat of the project and manages since then its international activities.
Nineteen years after the very first International Metropolis Conference that took place in Milan in 1996, the ISMU Foundation organizes the International Metropolis 2014Conference, titled “Migration: Energy for the Planet, Feeding Cultures” in Milan fromNovember, 3rd to November, 7th, 2014.
The five days of the Conference’s plenaries, workshops and encounters will gather more than 700 scholars, researchers, civil servants, NGO professionals and policy-makers coming from more than 40 countries.
Milan, as the most multi-ethnic city in Italy, is the ideal candidate for hosting the event. Milan is to host EXPO 2015 too. EXPO’s theme, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” offers an original interpretative guide to approach global mobility phenomena, seen as resources (energy) and wealth in terms of cultural diversity: “Migration: Energy for the Planet, FeedingCultures”.
The significance of the theme dealt with and the scientific prestige of the Metropolis Project are acknowledged by the Italian Government that inserted the Conference within the program of the Italian presidency of the Council of the European Union.
THE GRANT
The grant for the free participation in the International Metropolis 2014 Conference offered by the Humanitas Research Hospital comprise:
- The insertion as a presenter in one of the Conference’s workshops;
- The registration fees for the participation in the Conference and social events from November, 3rd to November, 7th, 2014;
- Travel costs to/from Milan in economy class;
- Accommodation for 4 nights in a hotel in Milan;
- A visit of the Humanitas Research Hospital.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Ph.D. candidates provided they are enrolled in a university of a developing country/African country for the academic year 2013/2014;
- Research doctors, provided they have completed their Ph.D. in a university of a developing country/African country after 2011;
- Researchers, provided they hold a research fellowship in a university of a developing country/African country.
Applicants meeting the foregoing conditions must also:
- Be nationals of a developing country/African country;
- Not be older than 35 as of December, 31st, 2014 (i.e. they must be born after 01/01/1979);
- Have an excellent command of the English language, written and spoken.
CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
Selected candidates must guarantee they will attend the five days of the Conference (3 to 7 November 2014).
PARTICIPATION MODALITIES
Applicants must fill the enclosed form and submit the following documents:
- A brief essay/paper of about 8000 characters (spaces included), written in English and relating to themes linked to migration and health. Applicants must also provide a title and four keywords. Such essay/paper is to be presented within a workshop to be defined by the Conference’s organizers (some workshops will be constituted on the basis of individual papers submitted to Metropolis 2014’s organizing committee; for more information, please visit:
- Curriculum Vitae (max. 3 pages; featuring the applicant’s academic career, publications and international experiences, inter alia);
- Certificate attesting the applicant is formally a Ph.D. candidate, a research doctor or a research fellow of an Italian university;
- Photocopy of an Identification Document (identity card or passport);
- Publications if relevant.
