First Reading

BACKGROUND:

The Department of Architecture is proposing a new degree program, a Master of Interior Architecture, to be jointly offered through Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Extended University and UCLA Extension. The Chancellor’s Office approved a similar degree program in 1991; it was never implemented due to limitations of budget and resources.

RESOURCES CONSULTED:

Kyle Brown, Kip Dickson, Denise Lawrence, Claudia Pinter-Lucke, Judith Sheine.

DISCUSSION:

Implementation of this joint degree will not require additional state resources. By offering this program through Cal Poly Pomona, the Architecture Department would be able to continue UCLA’s very successful program, which enrolls approximately 600 students, and would be able to open this program to new populations in the San Gabriel Valley, the Inland Empire and Orange County. The program is accredited by CIDA and there is no other program in southern California that offers an accredited program that can be taken on a part-time basis. A CIDA-accredited Masters degree offered jointly by Cal Poly Pomona and UCLA Extension would clearly be a unique resource in southern California and would help to distinguish the University from other campuses; expand the Architecture program, which is already recognized nationally for its academic rigor and excellence; provide another professional program with a hands-on approach to learning that also teaches students to apply sustainable principles to their work; and provide the opportunity to enroll a diverse group of students over a broad geographic range in southern California.

RECOMMENDATION:

The Academic Programs Committee recommends approval of the referral AP-019-089 Master of Interior Architecture.

Master of Interior Architecture – Curriculum Overview

Program Goals: The primary goal for the Master of Interior Architecture program is to provide an opportunity for individuals with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to pursue a rigorous program of part time study that prepares them to enter the field of interior design incorporating the highest standards of professional practice. The program particularly serves career-change students seeking to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming interior design professionals.

Student Learning Outcomes: The primary education goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to successfully enter the profession of interior architecture and design with a high level of creativity and critical thinking along with requisite technical knowledge and communication skills. As they move through the sequence of required classes, students are expected to demonstrate:

·  An understanding of professional values, ethics, and responsibilities

·  The capacity to engage in critical and creative thinking

·  Knowledge of the fundamentals of art and design theories

·  The capacity to use knowledge of human behavior and respond to user needs in design

·  The use of history of Western environmental arts to interpret the present

·  Knowledge and skill in 2-D and 3-D design processes

·  Knowledge and skill in programming, schematic design and preparation of construction documents

·  Capacity to clearly communicate visually, orally and in writing using manual and computer techniques

·  Knowledge of building systems and materials/product selection and installation

·  Knowledge of fire, safety, and building codes and universal design requirements

·  Knowledge of interior environmental health conditions and sustainability principles and practices

·  Knowledge about professional and business practices

·  Evaluate multiple sets of client/user needs, coordinate details

·  Contributions to community in a meaningful way

Culminating experience: The Master of Interior Architecture requires a “project” for its culminating experience. This requirement is met by two courses, INA 691: Master’s Project Interior Architecture Studio (8 units), and INA 695: Master’s Project Interior Architecture Documents (8 units). The Interior Architecture Master’s Project requires the student to independently develop an original design problem in which to demonstrate independent thinking, capacity to develop a design concept and rationale, and produce a complete set of drawings and documentation that illustrate the integration of technical and design knowledge. Students submit and present their design and submit documentation to complete the culminating experience.
