Needs Assessment. Identify current practices of the target audience, and then state best practices to be achieved through the activity. The difference (gap) between current and best practices identifies the educational need of the target audience and determines if the learners lack knowledge (awareness), competence (knowing how to do it), or performance (doing it). Learning objectives use action verbs specific to knowledge, competence, and/or performance (examples include: Analyze, apply, calculate, choose, classify, compare, complete, compose, conclude, construct, contrast, correlate, create, define, describe, determine, develop, discriminate, discuss, distinguish, evaluate, explain, formulate, identify, interpret, list, modify, organize, outline, plan, prepare, recite, record, recognize, relate, resolve, select, separate, solve, state, summarize, synthesize, use, write). Learning objectives are need for each gap (topic), not each lecture.

Please remember to include all breaks and lunches!

min / Zika update (60 min total: three 15 minute presentations and 15 minutes for Q&A) / Speaker #1 (15 minutes): Mike Busch (BSRI)
Graham Simmons
Speaker #2 (15 minutes): Charsey Porse (CDPH)
James Watts
Speaker #3 (15 minutes): Lou Katz (ABC) / Zika infection became a global health crisis due to its devastating impact on pregnant women and their children. Scientific evidence has substantiated the cause and effect relationship between intrauterine Zika infection and its impact on neuro development. Zika virus has also been demonstrated to survive in donated blood components. The US blood collection agencies along with its regulatory bodies rapidly developed risk mitigation strategies including additional donor screening questions and testing. / 1. Describe current scientific knowledge of Zika infection and blood safety.
2. Review California Department of Public Health’s role and involvement in blood safety and Zika infection.
3. Describe an ABC member’s approach to Zika virus risk mitigation in blood donors. / This topic was requested by attendees of the 2016 CBBS annual meeting and by the CBBS Scientific Program Committee. The audience will be physicians, laboratory staff and nurses who desire improved knowledge of this subject. / 1.0

min / Review of New FDA Draft Guidance on Bacterial Contamination: Impact to Hospitals and Blood Centers / Ross Heron (ARC)
Cathy Mazzei (ARC) / Bacterially contaminated platelets remain a significant concern for transfusion related adverse events. FDA has published a Draft Guidance on this issue with some suggestions that could have tremendous impact for both the blood center and hospital transfusion service. / 1. Review significant elements of the FDA Draft Guidance on Bacterial Contamination.
2. Identify the concerns and challenges of implementing FDA’s suggested process changes.
3. Discuss how the Final Guidance may change after public comments have been submitted. / Information on the FDA’s draft guidance was requested by attendees of the 2016 CBBS annual meeting and by the CBBS Scientific Program Committee. The audience will be physicians, laboratory staff and nurses who desire improved knowledge of this subject. / 0.5

Q&A and Discussion – 20 minutes / Given the regulatory and scientific complexity of modern blood banking, most hospital transfusion services rely on an outside blood center for the procurement of blood for transfusion. This session will discuss ways that hospital-based transfusion services can benefit from a close relationship with their blood suppliers relating to management of patients and quality assurance.
Management of a large recall event will also be described from the hospital perspective since it provides a good example of a successful partnership between the Blood Center and the hospital Transfusion Service. / 1. Describe three ways to optimize communication between blood centers and transfusion services, especially in challenging clinical situations.
2. Identify two examples of how quality has been enhanced via collaboration between the Blood Center and Transfusion Service
3. Analyze the inventory management processes used at a hospital during a large recall event.
4. Review how physician notification can be performed for transfused units impacted by a recall / It is important for hospitals and blood centers to understand how to effectively collaborate to maintain an adequate blood supply, provide the best patient care, and meet high quality standards. The audience will be physicians, laboratory staffand nurses who desire improved knowledge of this topic / 1.5
