VIRTUAL SCHOOL OPTION 4.72

Scope and Delivery

The Talladega City Board of Education will provide a virtual school option for students in grades 7-12 that includes all courses that are required to obtain an Alabama high school diploma. All virtual school courses will be provided through an accredited program that meets the minimum standards as specified in the Alabama Course of Study and taught by teachers with appropriate certification.

Any student enrolled in the Talladega City Schools that must work in the Virtual School environment will be provided a Chromebook and assigned to APEX Learning (an online coursework program). This will ensure that the student will have the proper equipment needed to learn from home, if necessary.

Student Eligibility Criteria

Participating students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for participation in the virtual school option:

• Comply with all residency and non-residency requirements

• Comply with the district’s Acceptable Use Agreement

• Meet any eligibility requirements for the course in question including, but not

limited to, successful completion of any prerequisite courses

• Maintain a satisfactory grade point average or elementary grade equivalent as

determined by the individualized learning plan

• Maintain appropriate course progression

• Have access to the internet and a computer outside of school

Eligibility to participate in the virtual school option will comply with all state and federal education statutes for students with disabilities.

Extracurricular Activities- Full-time students enrolled in virtual courses must meet the same academic eligibility requirements as those enrolled in the traditional day program. Students participating in sanctioned sports have to meet residency requirements as outlined by the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Monitoring Performance and Testing Requirements

Individual student performance will be monitored pursuant to the school system’s traditional academic credit requirements and grade scale. Students utilizing the virtual school option will be subject to all state testing and accountability requirements and will be subject to the same rules and regulations regarding the administration of such tests applicable to traditional public school students enrolled in the traditional public school in Alabama. The system reserves the right to require students utilizing the virtual school option to complete specified assessment activities on campus at a date and time selected by the school system.

Attendance

Students enrolled in a virtual course shall be exempt from any provision of general law, local policy, or administrative rules that apply to the traditional delivery of instruction, including, but not limited to, requirements to the physical presence of a student, transportation obligations, and time requirements, to the extent any of the forgoing conflict with the delivery of the virtual program. The school system reserves the right to set specific attendance requirements for each virtual course.

The Superintendent is authorized to develop procedures for the implementation of the virtual school option.
