What are you requesting? Why is the request being made? Where was the need identified?
Instructions: Explain what you are requesting (equipment, software, conference attendance, budget augmentation, faculty training, etc), why the request is timely and important and where the need was identified (analysis of assessment data, necessaryequipment has failed, department meeting discussion, etc.)
What are you requesting? For students in our Lighting and Scenic Design courses, 6 computer stations Loaded with Photoshop, Vectorworks and Microsoft Office to offer training in contemporary industry standards of design and execution. This will require the purchase of the computers, the stations for their installation, the purchase of Photoshop and Microsoft office software and the educational license for Vectorworks. The Vectorworks package includes 2D and 3D CAD programs for Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Architectural Design, Landscape Architectural Design, Interior Design, Sound Design and Event Design with High Level Rendering for all programs. Vectorworks is very user-friendly and is industry standard. It allows students to:
1. Create 2D plans and elevations
2. Generate a 3D model with different camera angles
3. Introduce textures and finishes
4. Apply lighting solutions
5. Use their own textures and images in the model
6. Prepare images for printing.
7. Gain insight into how lighting, props, set design and technical management can be incorporated into the one design tool.
Why is the request being made? In order to keep our program current and competitive we must invest in the materials that reflect the current industry standards. All the UC and CSU system theater Departments offer training in this program and it is the industry standard.
MSJCoffers technical theater classes thatseveral of the other area community college campusesdo not offer. We offer an AA and Certificate in Musical Theatre and a Certificate in Technical Theater. This separates us from other community colleges in our area as no one else offers this breath of technical classes with the opportunity to practice these skills in our full scale productions. Our training resources must build on this advantage and set ourselves apart. No other Riverside Community Colleges offerVectorworks – the closest are Palomar Community College and Mira Costa College.
Where was the need identified? Through personal knowledge and research, I know that we are currently behind the curve in respect to offering our students modern real world design experience and allowing our transfer students a leg up on what they will encounter in the UC and CSU schools.
Section I / Explain how your request is supported by your Program Review (2011) or Annual Program Assessment (2012-13, 2013-14):
Instructions: To receive points (6)for this section, you must connect this RAP to your 2011 program review or 2012-13 or 2013-14 annual program assessment. If applicable, cut and paste from your program review or annual program assessment. Cite the document (either program review or annual program assessment, and the year if the language utilized is from an annual program assessment) and the page number. NOTE: From this point on, no partial credit will be awarded for your responsesso make alltiesto this RAP from your program review documents, learning outcomes andinstitutional plans, priorities and goals as clear and strong as possible!
The need for this resource was identified in both the 2010 Program Review (page 3) and the Program Assessment of 2013-14 - Enrollment, retention and success rates have dramatically increased during the past5 years there is a need to offer students training in contemporary industry standards of design and execution. In order to fulfill our pedagogical goal of providing a meaningful recognized Certificate in Technical Theater we need to be able to provide experience on the types of programs students will encounter in the work place once they leave our institution.
Section I / Describe how your request is supported by your Unit Plan (provide link to 2013-14 Unit Plan)
Instructions: To receive points (5) for this section, you must join this RAP to the current unit plan created by your dean. If applicable, cut and paste from the unit plan, citing the page number.
My dean has informed me not to concern myself with this section however, it is my belief that the unit plan includes the addition of design studios.
Section I / Explain how your request is supported by your CLO/PL0/AUO/SLO:
Instructions: To receive points (9) for this section, you must tie this RAP to your current learning outcomes. List the learning outcomes that link to this RAP and explain how these learning outcomes support this RAP.
I feel adding these computers and programs to our teaching resources will meet the following:
ILO’s
Critical Thinking: The student will reason and think critically.
Aesthetic Awareness: The student will possess aesthetic awareness
PLO’s
1. Develop an appreciation for theatre through critical analysis of the performing arts.
2. Develop an aesthetic awareness through theater.
3. Develop essential skills in the craft of theater.
THA 123 Scenic Design SLO’s
1. Explain the seven steps in the design process.
2. Exhibit the interpretive skill of reading theatrical construction drawings including ground plans, cross sections and elevations.
3. Create theatrical blueprints
THA 120 Lighting SLO’s
  1. Calculate and convert watts, amperage, and volts.
  2. Read or draw a lighting plot.
Theater students at MSJC receive a well-rounded education. Students are exposed to every major aspect of theater production. To make sure we stay current we are bringing in adjunct instructors for our technical classes that are not only educators but who continue to work in their fields professionally. To fully support their efforts and expertise we must offer the types of real world programs they use in their daily work.
Section II / Describe how your request is aligned with one or more of the following Institutional Priorities: (link to strategic plan)
Student Success
Instructions: To receive points (10) for this section, you must join this RAP to an increase in student success. How would funding this RAP improve student learning? Describe specifically how students would benefit.
The computer stations and related design programs will directly support student success by enabling theater faculty to teach current trends and deliver concepts in a more animated complete fashion than allowed for in traditional technical methods alone. It will allow students who leave with a technical certificate to be familiar with the industry standard programs.
Fiscally Sound Position:
Instructions: To receive points (8 for this section, you must connect this RAP to a more fiscally sound position for the district. For example, how would funding this RAP increase district revenues or decrease district expenditures?
Vectorworks program licensing is given at a very competitive price and the licenses are good in perpetuity
Each license costs : $295
Each access dongle costs - $25
For six licenses and dongles - $1920
We could continue to use the programs as is or opt to upgrade as new versions appear (on average updates are done yearly)
Updates costs - $149 per license.
The program could be loaded onto more than six computers provided no more than six computers would be in using the program at any given time.
Vectorworks also providesa free one year license to students that they can download onto their personal computers. Students can reapply after one year for additional free use as long as they are in school. Once students graduate, they can purchase Vectorworks software at a deeply discounted rate to help them launch their careers.
Admittedly installing these computers and programs does not initially decrease expenditure, however having these programs could well spark more interest in our design classes and increase enrollment to the point that we could offer these classes on a more frequent rotation while increasing our income. These are also fields of study that fit into our renewed focus on vocational education.
In addition the package comes with design programs that facilitate design classes in architecture, landscape architecture and sound design. This is a resource that could also benefit the Audio and Video department and Turf and Landscape Management Dept.
Systematic Planning and Assessment:
Instructions: To receive points (2) for this section, you must fasten this RAP to an enhancement in the district's institutional effectiveness effort. For example, how would funding this RAP improve assessment, the program review process or the use of data for decision-making and/or institutional improvements?
The college makes every effort to ensure the texts we use for our classes are current and in keeping with current trends and thinking in each discipline. We have made investments in computing and design facilities on both campuses. This would be a logical continuation of that investment in computing and design facilities to remain current and relevant.
To facilitate assessment, student results on CAD programs could be linked to assessment data.
Section II / Institutional Pride and Organizational Culture:
Instructions: To receive points (3) for this section, you must join this RAP to an increase in institutional pride or improvement of our district's organizational culture. For example, how would funding this RAP increase student and/or staff investment and pride in the institution?
As previously statedMSJC offers technical theater classes that several of the other area community college campuses do not offer. We offer an AA and Certificate in Musical Theatre and a Certificate in Technical Theater. This separates us from other community colleges in our area as no one else offers this breath of technical classes with the opportunity to practice these skills in our full scale productions.Being able to offer a program that is the current industry standard that equates to what students will find when they either transfer to a four4 year institution or seek work after they graduate from our institution will add prestige to our program and student regard for the training they can receive at MSJC.
Community Partnerships and Service
Instructions: To receive points (2) for this section, you must connect this RAP to an improvement in community partnerships and/or service. For example, how would funding this RAP make our local communities view our district in a more favorable light?
Recently one of our students went on to procure a job on the technical crew at Old Town Temecula Community Theater. While we are proud of her, she may have commanded a more advanced job at this theater or another theater, had she had this additional design training.
Section III / Describe how your request will support one or more of the 12 Institutional Goals in the Strategic Plan (link to Strategic Plan)
Instructions: Return to the strategic plan and study the 12 institutional goals. Connect this RAP to as many of these goals as possible. To ensure the points (10) for this box are awarded, list those goals that link to this RAP. Fully explain how these goals tie to this RAP.
I believe this proposal link to the following Institutional Goals:
  1. Integrate learning, engagement, access and teaching initiatives that support student academics and personal growth.
-By modernizing our teaching resources and providing students with the kinds of programs they will encounter in the work place we are giving them more support to their academic endeavors and growth as professionals.
10. Increase the College’s visibility, value, and recognition in our service area
- We would be the only college in our immediate area and one of the few in our surrounding area to offer this resource.
Section III / Explain how your project goals are supported by any of the following plans (2009-16 Educational Master Plan (2 points), Distance Education Plan (1 point), Technology Plan(1 point) and/or the Facilities Master Plan (1 point)):
Instructions: Review the plans above. Join this RAP to each applicable plan. To ensure the points for this section are maximized, list the plans that tie to this RAP and explain fully how each links to this RAP. Cut and paste plan verbiage where appropriate. Cite page numbers for each plan that is referenced.
The following are supporting quotes taken from the 2009-16 Educational Master Plan. I believe they address how this request fits into all the plans.:
With regard to the San Jacinto theatre complex, with needs for seating, storage, lighting, scene shop, new legs and travelers, and a total renovation of the fly system, new construction appears to be the only realistic way to meet intermediate- and long-term needs. ….. equipment….has already surpassed expected usable life.
There is a performing arts complex planned for SJC. Plans are being revised and developed to move multi-media, digital arts and communication into designated instructional spaces within the complex. (These computers and programs fit into the needs already identified. While the courses these computers and programs support should not be fully online courses, the fact that students can download the programs on their own computers for free certainly makes them candidates for hybrid courses)
Transfer education and job preparatory skills will be the highest goals for our students, thus requiring a continued college expansion in academic and career fields, and in the basic skills and supportive services related to these goals. (Experience of these programs will insure our students are more equipped to cope with the programs they will encounter upon transfer)
The Career and Technical Education strands already in development are positioned to serve the major job fields in California for the future (health careers, office and technical education, social services/emergency services, and computer-related fields); ―special advantage or ―niche programs will add appeal, recognition, and student success in this area. ( These programs will serve as better preparation for Career and Technical Education students aiming for employment after their time at our institution.)
Section III / Describe your goal(s) for this proposal? How will this improve student learning or enhance institutional services? (link to goals and objectives PowerPoint by our own assessment coordinator extraordinaire, Brandon Moore!!!)
Instructions: Follow the link above to review the structure of a "goal" and then share all goals for the project contained in this RAP. To ensure the points (10) for this section are earned, explain fully how each project goal connects to this RAP.
Goals for this project would be the following:
1.Increase student interest in our design courses
2. Enhance student learning
3.Increase industry credence to the Certificate in Technical Theater that we offer
Section IV / What are the measureable outcomes for this RAPthat will assess progress toward meeting your goal(s) (5 points)? Explain how your outcomes are tied to your CLO/PLO/AUO/SLO(10 points) (link to learning outcome resources and reference materials, as created and compiled by... yes, you guessed it... our own assessment coordinator extraordinaire, Brandon Moore!!! C'mon, put your hands together, PEOPLE!!)
Instructions: Follow the link above to review the structure of a "measurable outcome" and then create measurable outcomes for this RAP. To ensure the points earned for this section are maximized, explain fully 1.) how each outcome will assess the effectiveness of the (funded) RAP over its project's lifetime and 2.) join these RAP measurable outcomes to all applicable course, program, administrative or other student learning outcomes.
The project will have direct effect on these PLO’s:
2. Develop an aesthetic awareness through theater.
3. Develop essential skills in the craft of theater.
And these SLO’s:
2. Exhibit the interpretive skill of reading theatrical construction drawings including ground plans, cross sections and elevations.
3. Create theatrical blueprints
2.Read or draw a lighting plot.
We will be able to assess whether this increases interest in these class by looking at enrollment numbers. Whether this project enhances student learning will be seen by our course completion rates and Instructor observation. We can gage our goal of giving credence to our tech certificates by the fact that we will be offering industry standard training.
Section V / What are the steps that you will take or need to be taken to implement this proposal? Demonstrate the following :
