Dear Parents/Carers

CAFOD Young Leaders Programme

I am writing to inform you that your son/daughter has shown interest in taking part in CAFOD Young Leader’s programme this year. This programme enables young people to learn leadership and organisational skills to lead community based activities and support CAFOD’s work of fighting poverty and injustice. The deadline for application to reach CAFOD is Friday 29 September 2017.

Participating schools from our diocese include Christ the King College (Isle of Wight), Salesian College (Farnborough), St Joseph’s College (Reading), St Anne’s (Southampton), Farnborough Hill and Blessed Hugh Faringdon (Reading). We will be joined by St George’s (Weybridge), St Peter’s (Guildford), and Salesian School (Chertsey) from the Arundel and Brighton diocese.

Training and Dates for the Diary

The programme consists of three training days throughout the year (conducted by our Youth Leadership Coordinator, Sarah Burrows). Please ensure the training dates are in your school’s calendar, and in due course, in your students’ diaries too:

  • Day 1: Tuesday 17 October 2017 (10am – 3pm)

St Joseph’s College, 64 Upper Redlands Road, Reading, RG1 5JT

  • Day 2: Thursday 25 January 2018 (10am – 3pm)

Farnborough Hill, 312 Farnborough Road, Farnborough, Hants, GU14 8AT

  • Day 3: Thursday 26 April 2018 (10am – 3pm, followed by certificate presentation and celebration until 4.30pm)

Amigo Hall London (next to CAFOD’s Head Office, 55 Westminster Bridge Road, SE1 7JB

Students will need packed lunches on Day1 of the training. We intend to travel to St Joseph’s, Reading, by minibus and do not expect to be back in time for students to catch buses from school if they do. Please ensure that you have made necessary arrangements for the end of the day.

The cost of the trip is £13.50. As this trip is deemed to be an enhancement to the curriculum, the school normally is unable to offer financial assistance and therefore the full cost of the activity must be borne by yourselves. Payments and accompanying paperwork must be handed in on or before the deadline date specified to avoid jeopardising your child’s place on the trip/activity. Should your child withdraw from the activity, please be aware if a deposit is required that this will be non-refundable and any further payments can only be refunded if the place can be filled by another student on a waiting list, or if the withdrawal is for an insurable reason. If there are significant changes to the cost of the trip, these may have to be passed on to the student. Be assured that we will try to keep such costs to a minimum.

We would advise that students do not to take valuables out on school activities, however, should they be taken parents should ensure personal possessions are adequately insured. It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to update the school should there be any changes to the medical information about their child. Please communicate these to Mrs Brettell, Business Support Manager.

Please complete and return the consent form and payment to the Finance Office by Friday 29 September. Our preferred method of payment is online. Alternatively, you can pay by cash or cheque (made payable to Oaklands Catholic School).

Please ensure that you have signed and completed a CAFOD Young Leader application form, which includes a medical and consent form and a photo permissions slip. This application form will assist CAFOD in getting to know each participant’s training needs and help students discern their current skill level and the areas in which they would like to grow.

Best wishes

Mr M Sumba
