This is an unaffiliated event which will be run using BHS TREC rules and guidelines. It is designed to encourage beginners who may have competed at TREC in its short form – either VTH or the Winter Series Indoor TREC’s to move up to a full TREC without the worry of getting lost. The POR phase (mounted orienteering) will take place entirely within the boundary of Home Farm, mostly on well marked tracks; there will be no roadwork, although you will be riding in close proximity to a well fenced railway line for a short distance.
The competition consists of three phases, the winners being those competitors with the highest accumulated points. Maximum total from all three phases is 460 points.
Phase 1 CoP (Control of Paces): a test to determine the rider's control of their horse's paces. You will need to canter the length of a marked corridor as slowly as possible, and return in a fast walk. Breaks of pace will result in a zero score for that pace only. Maximum score 60 points (2 x 30).
Phase 2 PTV (Obstacles): a timed course of up to 16 natural and simulated obstacles to demonstrate the horse's obedience and handiness as well as the rider's use of appropriate aids. Maximum score 160 points.
Phase 3 POR (Mounted Orienteering): After a 10 minute visit to the Map Room to copy down your route onto a blank map, you will then be following this route which will be no longer than 6 km for this competition (at level 1 this would normally be around 12km).
Saturday 7th April
There will be a guided course walk at 5pm. If you are trying TREC for the first time, it would be beneficial for you to come to this as the rules for completing and judging each obstacle will be described in detail. We will also endeavour to answer any questions that you may have about the PTV and the other phases.
The Data sheets for each obstacle will be displayed by the Secretary’s tent on Sunday 8th April for those who can’t attend the course walk.

2012 BHS TREC Rules
The Show Organisers, Judges, Stewards and any other officials on the day of the Show, accept no responsibility for any loss of or damage to property belonging to competitors, their servants and spectators. Rules as per the current BHS TREC Rulebook (fifth Edition) and general rules detailed below:
The BHS TREC Rulebook is available to purchase from the British Horse Society Bookshop, Abbey Park, Stareton, Kenilworth, CV8 2XZ. www.britishhorse.com
1 BHS TREC Competitions are open to all horses and ponies provided that they are a minimum of four years old in 2012 (ie a horse born in 2008 may compete in 2012).
2. Mares that are more than four months pregnant should not be competing.
3. Competitors must hold suitable third party public liability and personal accident insurance or be a BHS Gold member or BRC member.
4. Riders under the age of fourteen on the day of the competition may only compete in Pairs classes and must be accompanied by a rider of 16 years or older. Pairs ride together for the POR and separately for CoP and PTV. Parents/ guardians of competitors under the age of sixteen will be required to complete a Parental Consent Form.
5. Competitors competing in BHS TREC Qualifiers or the Championship of Great Britain must either be a BHS Gold Member or a BRC Member. This rule is not applicable to this competition.
6. Clearly visible coloured tail wraps/ ribbons should be worn to advise other riders of a potential hazard – Red = Kicker, Green = young or inexperienced horse, Blue = stallion. If the horse/ pony is a stallion, then a stallion disc should be worn on both sides of the bridle.
7. For Level 1 and Level 2 competitions any senior riders who have been selected to represent Great Britain at TREC in the last two years will be ineligible to compete as individuals (they may compete HC). They may compete as part of a pair but will be penalised 25 points per phase for both the POR and PTV (total 50 points). This rule will be applied to the Open pairs class.
8. No rider will be permitted to start any phase of the competition unless wearing a hard had, which meets a standard currently recommended by the BHS – PAS 015, EN1384, ASTM F 1163, SNELL E2001. All of the above should have the BSI “KITE” mark and/ or the American equivalent, the “SEI” mark securely (non-removable) attached to the hat.
9. Riders may choose to wear a body protector during any phase of the competition. If worn, BETA 3 standard is strongly recommended. If a rider chooses to wear an airbag style protector for the PTV phase it must be worn over a standard type body protector and if activated, must be deflated or removed before continuing. Riders wearing Exo Body Cage protectors must inform the Secretary at all events. For riders wearing body protectors during the PTV phase, the following height allowances will be added to the Low Branches – Level 1 & 2: 2 inches, Level 3: 1 inch, Level 4: no allowance.
10. Riders must wear suitable footwear, or use enclosed stirrups.
11. Standing martingales and other fixed reins are forbidden.
12. Whips must not exceed 75cms (1m for side-saddle). Spurs, if worn, must be rounded, not exceeding 3cms in length and pointed downwards.
13. Mobile phones may be carried for use in an emergency during the POR, but must be declared prior to entering the map room and be switched off.
14. During the POR phase, riders must wear fluorescent/ reflective hi-viz clothing. The minimum requirement is clearly visible fluorescent strips on the riders torso. It is strongly recommended that this is also reflective and is supplemented by a fluorescent/ reflective hatband and hi-viz clothing on the horse.
15. Medical armbands or equivalent ID are compulsory and must be worn for all three phases of the competition. The medical armband should include basic information to help any First Aid staff to assist you and should be easily visible. Information should include: Name, Address, Next of Kin and contact details for them, any relevant medical information e.g. allergies or current medication. Medical armbands can be purchased from the BHS Bookshop priced £5.99. Tel: 02476 840541.
16. Separate ID is also required to be carried on the horse and rider. The information on this should be your name, competitor number, the organiser’s name and emergency telephone number for the event.
17. A horse losing a shoe (or boot) during the POR must be fitted with appropriate footwear before continuing on the route. Such horses will not be permitted to leave a checkpoint until this has been carried out and time penalties will be incurred if the rider cannot leave a checkpoint at their allotted time.
18. Those competitors competing in Hoof-Boots are not expected to carry emergency farriers tools for shoe removal but should instead carry the relevant tools to adjust the sizing of their brand of Hoof-Boot in case a replacement boot needs to be fitted. Horses competing unshod at Level 3 and above must still carry a spare hoof boot in case of damage to a hoof.
19. The decisions of the BHS Technical Delegate and the Judges are deemed to be final and must be complied with at all times. Competitors may be eliminated from the competition for any of the following reasons:
· Excessive use of the whip
· Dangerous riding
· Abusive language/ rudeness
20. If competitors are not ready for their start time when they are called into the Map Room, their map Room time will start, thus leaving less time for that competitor to mark the route down. If the competitor requires extra time, they will then accrue 5 penalties for each commencement of a minute they are over their allocated departure time.
21The CoP and PTV areas are out of bounds and competitors must not ride in these areas until their allocated time. All competitors must warm up in the appropriate places as per the Competition’s instructions. Any competitor found to be warming up their horses within the CoP and PTV areas may be eliminated.
