Barnet’sTHRIVE Mental Health and Resilience in Schools (MHARS) Programmeaims to:
  • Improve the emotional resilience of pupils in Barnet and schools’ understanding of the risk and protective factors involved in mental health
  • Promote positive mental health in schools
  • Prevent the development of mental illness in school pupils
  • Demonstrate and further develop the links between positive mental health and achievement
through the development of a shared framework and resources to support practice

“Good schools already do many things that promote resilience without necessarily being aware of the underpinning theory and research.Understanding more fully why those things are so important, how they inter-relate and why they make a difference will ensure that they become part of the consistent policy and practice of the school rather than being dependent on a few individuals.” Young Minds

The purpose of the THRIVE MHARS project is to:
  • Support up to 6schools to collaboratively develop, pilot and evaluate the framework and activities to support pupils’ mental health and resilience through:
  • Mapping what they currently have in place in relation to the framework
  • Establishing a baseline of the emotional wellbeing of pupils
  • Identifying (at least) one element of their work to develop
  • Choosing and implementing a project or specific activity/ies
  • Developing work, measuring its impact and sharing practice
This work will be supported by an experienced individual who has supported similar work elsewhere.
Schools will need to: / Schools involved in the project will:
  • Identify a leader in the school to work on the project
  • Be able to attend one collaborative meeting every half term
  • Work with the QI project lead to:
  • map their current provision
  • identify measures for pupils’ emotional wellbeing
  • regularly measure pupils’ emotional wellbeingat key times in school life e.g. transition
  • record their data and share with the QI network
  • Develop at least one element of their work within the framework through identified activity or a project
  • Share good practice and agree for any findings to be published and shared (within Barnet and nationally, as appropriate)

We are looking for a range of schools / PRUs, at different stages of their work in this area.

Two members of the THRIVE MHARS steering group will visit the school to talk to the head and lead teacher as part of the application process. Please give three possible days and times when this meeting could take place.
