July 11 - Parish of Weston Patrick, Application for Relief

John Carter aged 43 Able bodied labourer generally in Constant Work at present employed turnip hoeing has a wife and eight children namely

Harriett 17 – Ann 16 – Elizabeth 14 No employment

William 12 – works for Mr Heath at 3 [Penbrook] – Sarah 10 – Ellen [6] – Jane 2 – Thomas 6 mths

Rent of cottage £3 per annum, paid by Overseer

July 24 – Parish of Basing – Application for Relief

David Wareham able bodied labourer has been at work on the Railway till within a few days – at present no employment has a wife and five children to support, Eldest child a Girl 13 years old, Youngest daughter [??] 6 weeks old.

Rent of Cottage 30/- per annum paid by Overseer.

John Wallis able bodied labourer work on Railway – has a wife and 5 children to support. Eldest a boy 9 years of age, Youngest ditto 8 days. Lives in Poor House.

James Harwood able bodied labourer – constant work – a wife and 5 children. Eldest a girl 9 years old, Youngest ditto 6 weeks.

Elizabeth Smith aged 17 has been ill eight days and quite unable to work, father in Greenwich Hospital. Mother dead. Resides with her Grandmother who receiving permanent Parochial aid.

Benjamin Clarke applies for Relief in consequence of his shoulder being dislocated by a fall from a load of hay on the 15 July 35. He is a married man but his family are grown up.

John Wallis labourer applies for Relief having a bad leg which has prevented his doing any work since the 24th inst. Has a wife and five children to support.

6/- per week so long as they are unable to work

Mary Rice Widow 67 years of age has been ill and unable to work 3 weeks past and still continues ill – when employed received 4/- per week

Charles Mansbridge able bodied labourer has a wife & 5 children applies for assistance his wife having a bad back and being unable to do for her family – lives in Parish House rent free.

August 1 – Parish of Newnham

William Morris labourer aged 71 years applies for Relief being ill and unable to work. Has a wife aged 68 who is able to do but little. Has a leaseholder cottage with rent 5/- per annum.

August 3 – Parish of Basing

William May aged 78 applies for a person to take care of his wife aged 80, who from imbecility of Body & Mind requires constant attendance. Earning 7/- a week. Rent 52/- per year paid by himself.

William Upton aged 84 applies for 6d per week to be added to his present allowance of 2/6d to enable him to pay his lodging.

John Hidcoop [?] aged 26 applies for relief having been ill and unable to work 11 months past – receives 4/- per week from Benefit Society out of which he has to contribute 6d per week to the said Society and to pay 1/- per week. [?] has a wife and one child.

Remuneration is claimed for attendance on John Byde 80 years of age who has been confined to his Bed by illness during the last two months and quite unable to help himself.

Martha Duckett Parishioner of Newnham being at Sherfield, aged 13. Father dead and mother married again, has been allowed 2/- per week, her name [....tted] in the List of Paupers, the money being paid half yearly.

To be paid 2/- a week as before.

Elizabeth Baker 17 years of age applies for relief being ill and unable to work – Her father is a labourer and has 4 children to support, namely James aged 10 years, Jane 8 years, Mary 3 years, Matthew 5 months.

2/6 per week to be paid out in provisions till the sick person is mended

Augst 21 – Parish of Basing

The Relieving Officer applies for the sum of £2 9s 3d being the amount of expense incurred in the care of Thomas Head a traveller, aged 31, his wife Sophia, 32, and their 4 children, namely Thomas aged 6 years, James 4 years, William 2 and an infant 2 months, who came into the Parish of Basing on the 5th July and left the 11th August, during which time the said 4 children had the small pox , the expense of which amounted to the sum above stated.

August 21 – Parish of Upton Grey

John Hall aged 27 a Parishioner of Odiham take ill with Small Pox on the 1st August and is now with his mother , Susan Spraggs, who has attended him during the last 2 weeks, for which she claims remuneration.

Amount of Relief given by Overseer, 2/6d, by Relieving Officer, 3/- - Further relief is required.

The above was allowed and further relief to be given where necessary [?] to apply again

August 21 – Parish of Basing

Daniel Benwall able bodied labourer applies for assistance in consequence of his wife being ill and unable to attend to her family during the last six weeks. He has 5 children to support the eldest a girl 9 years and the youngest 1 year of age. His Eldest daughter aged 17 has attended her Mother during her illness.

August 28 – Parish of Basing

Robert White able bodied labourer a widower – has 3 children unable to work. Applies for relief in consequence of one of his children a girl 2 years of age having been very ill during the last 2 months.

Up Nately – Hannah Bottom aged 68 a widow, applies for relief not having any employment. Lives with her two sons and a daughter who keeps a School for her own support. To have 2/- a week

Up Nately – Ann Egan aged 40 applies stating she has had no employment – was deserted by her husband some years ago and has since had two Bastard Children.. [??] keeps them [???] House – a Labourer in constant work. Refused

Herriard – Joseph Skelton Labourer has 5 children to support, the eldest 12 the youngest 1 year old. Applies for assistance to buy clothes for a girl aged 14 going to London to service a pound to be paid out in clothes for the girl and enquiry to be made as to the purchase of the same

Weston Patrick – James Moor applies on behalf of James Hall, a friend left boy aged 14. He is in want of clothes and if no employment can be had will require an allowance for his support. 1/- a week till in employment

Up Nately – Ann Egan applied to the Board on Friday last not having any employment. Enquiry was ordered to be made which has been done and it appears there is no work for her at present. 2 half gallon loaves and 6d a week till in employment.

Newnham – James Andrews 78 his wife 71 are both ill and unable to manage for themselves, applies to be allowed a woman to attend them. Allow 1/- a week

Herriard – Stephen Kearsley aged 66 is allowed 3/- per week. Applies for assistance to enable him to buy a pair of shoes. 5/-

Benjamin Baker, Labourer, unhealthy applies for relief having 5 children to support the eldest under 9 years of age – the family appears much distressed 10/- to be paid out in clothes

William White Labourer earnings 9/6 a week applies for relief having 5 children to support family in great distress, childrens’ shoes and clothes very bad. 10/- to be given out in clothes

Upton Grey – Elizabeth Willard widow aged 73 applies to have her allowance increased to 3/- a week. It was reduced to 2/6 in consequence of her living in a Parish House. If the Board will grant her applicaiton she can reside with her son, Charles Millard. 5/- to buy some clothes

Basing – Sophia Swan aged 17 applies for relief having an illegitimate female child born 29 Nov 1834. Richard Mott, Labourer, residing at Ashford in Middlesex has supported the child till within the last fortnight, when he refused to pay any more. To the Workhouse at Bstoke, Oct 9th 1835. W L Sclater
