Waste Exchanges and Trading Services
What is a waste exchange?
A waste exchange is a service that promotes the use of one company’s waste as another company’s raw material. A waste exchange is, in effect, a dating service for industrial process and manufacturing waste. Waste exchanges typically list materials that are available and materials that are wanted. They can be either private or publicly based.
How do I find a waste exchange?
Listed below are several waste exchanges that offer trading opportunities across a ange of materials. Some waste exchanges specialize in a specific material, while others offer access to a broader range of chemical and secondary materials. Depending on the waste exchange, they may or may not charge a nominal subscription fee, which can be easily recouped with the first successful match. There are both regional and national waste exchanges. Depending on the type and quantity of the waste material, it is not uncommon for a company to pay both material fees and transportation costs.
Does Delaware have a waste exchange?
Yes we do. The Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partenership (DEMEP) sponsors the Delaware Recyclng Exchange – an Internet-based database of companies listing materials for sale, purchase or trade.

EPA’s WasteWi$eMany companies have demonstrated that waste reduction and recycling practices can reap substantial savings in avoided disposal costs and the purchase of virgin materials, in some cases saving upwards of a million dollars per year.
The US EPA developed the WasteWi$e program to assist businesses, large and small, in taking cost-effective actions to reduce solid waste.
To accept the WasteWi$e challenge, your company would commit to achievements that you choose in each of these areas: Waste Prevention, Recycling Collection, Buying or Manufacturing Recycled Products. Each of these three waste reduction activities offers distinct benefits, both for the environment and your bottom line.
In addition to the benefits associated with waste reduction, participation in WasteWi$e offers several advantages.
- EPA will provide technical assistance via a hotline, an e-mail based list serve, “how to” publications, lessons from other companies, and regular program updates.
- Successful waste reduction efforts will be highlighted in EPA documents, business magazines, environmental journals, and trade publications.
- Participating companies may also use the WaseWi$e logo in their advertising.
- WasteWi$e provides an opportunity for your firm to be viewed by peers and customers as a leader in environmental initiatives.
