Butterflies Here, Butterflies There

Butterflies here, butterflies there

Butterflies, butterflies, everywhere

Flittering butterflies travel

Colorful butterflies glide

Beautiful butterflies soar

And delicate butterflies migrate

Butterflies in the garden

Butterflies on the mallow leaf

Butterflies under the shade

And butterflies over my head

Butterflies here, butterflies there

Butterflies, butterflies everywhere

Butterflies! Butterflies! Butterflies!

Metamorphosis

By Audrey Howard

(To the tune of Bingo)

First an egg and then a chrysalis,

Soon it becomes a butterfly.

Chorus:

Metamorphosis, Metamorphosis,

Metamorphosis, that’s called transformation.

First an egg and then a cocoon,

Soon it becomes a honey bee.

Chorus

First an egg and then a tadpole,

Soon it became a bullfrog.

Chorus

I’m a Caterpillar and a Butterfly

Audrey Howard

I’m a caterpillar and I’m here to say,

I have a chewing mouth that eats all day.

I have simple eyes that don’t see well,

My body has segments, beginning to swell.

I have prolegs with suction cups,

They help me walk and keep me stuck.

I have two antennae that are out of sight,

My body has bristles to reflect the light.

I keep on growing and by and by,

Someday I’ll be a beautiful butterfly.

Functions, function in my system,

Functions, define each organism.

I’m a butterfly and I’m here to tell,

I have two antennae that touch and smell.

I have a proboscis to drink nectar food,

I have compound eyes that see colors too.

I have six legs that help me taste,

I have four wings that fly with haste.

I pollinate flowers to help them grow,

My job is important don’t you know?

Someday I’ll fly and find a mate,

Then lay my eggs on the plant and wait.

Functions, function in my system,

Functions, define each organism.

Organisms Here, Organisms There

By Rita Kretschman

Organisms here, organisms there,

Organisms, organisms everywhere.

Flowering plants blooming,

Sturdy trees towering,

Social insects building,

And microscopic bacteria floating.

Pill bugs in their exoskeleton,

Snails in the pond,

Beetles in a rotting log,

And guppies in the fresh water.

Organisms here, organisms there,

Organisms, organisms, everywhere.

Organisms, Organisms, Organisms!

Biologist Bugaloo

(by Tara Childs)

I’m a biologist and I’m here to say,

I study how organisms live everyday.

Sometimes I write a paper.

Sometimes I read a book.

But usually I go and take a look.

Arachnids, insects, plants, too.

Doing the biologist BUGALOO!

I study organisms and how they survive.

I wonder why some die and others thrive.

They move, breathe, grow and excrete.

Some are social while others are discrete.

Their lives go through many developmental stages.

I write about them in my journal pages.

Tarantula, Painted Lady, Sunflower, too.

Doing the biologist BUGALOO!

Organisms impact our ecosystems

Watching them, I gain wisdom

Some pollinating flowers for fruit production

Fruit that will be used for our consumption

Others working to feed the brood

Hive to flowers, hard to allude

Plants gaining nutrients from the soil and growing tall

Sun, air, water, for all.

Black widow, caterpillar, grass, too.

Doing the biologist BUGALOO!

Ecosystems Support All Life

By Neddy Martinez

Adapted by Audrey Howard and Team

(Tune to: “London Bridges”)

Ecosystems support all life,

support all life, support all life

Ecosystems support all life,

By providing food, air, and water.

Apple trees produce oxygen

produce oxygen, produce oxygen,

Apple trees produce oxygen

And provide food for humans and animals.

Butterflies pollinate flowers

pollinate plants, pollinate trees

Butterflies pollinate flowers

Helping them grow strong and profitable.

Rivers are a source of fresh water

source of fresh water, source of fresh

water,

Rivers are a source of fresh water

And provide food for humans and animals.

Sunflowers grow in the field

grow in the field, grow in the field

Sunflowers grow in the field

Providing nectar, seeds, and oil.

Insect Bugaloo

Adapted from M. Brechtel by Kay Gorchels and Sally Mack

I’m an entomologist and I’m here to say

I study insects in an interesting way

Sometimes I take a picture; sometimes I read a book,

Sometimes I use a net to take a closer look

Ladybugs, bumble bees and army ants too,

Doin’ the entomologist BUGALOO!

I’m a lepidopterist and I’m here to say,

I specifically study butterflies every day

Sometimes I take pictures, observe and read a book,

I even mount specimens to take a closer look

Morpho, Monarch and Painted Lady too

Doin’ the Lepidopterist BUGALOO!!

Butterfly Cycle

By Suzy Gazley

Tune: Row, Row Your Boat

Hatch, hatch little egg,

I’m so very small.

Teeny tiny caterpillar,

You can’t see me at all.

Crawl, Crawl caterpillar,

Munching on a leaf.

Crawling, munching, crawling, munching

Eat and eat and eat

Form, form chrysalis,

I’m a different shape;

Hanging by a silken thread

Until I can escape.

Rest, rest chrysalis

While I change inside;

Now at last my time has come

To be a butterfly.

Stretch, stretch, pretty wings

It’s a special day

Soon they will be strong enough

For me to fly away.

Fly, fly butterfly,

Fly from flower to tree;

Find a place to lay my eggs

So they can grow like me.

Changes

By Sally A. Mack and Kay M. Gorchels

“You are my Sunshine”

Metamorphosis, oh metamorphosis,

Butterflies are insects that change in many ways.

Eggs on a host plant hatch out small larvae

And they eat their weight in a day.

Caterpillars grow larger, caterpillars grow larger,

And their skin gets really tight.

They shed their skin and it’s called molting

Their final molt, it fits just right.

They live in a chrysalis, they live in a chrysalis,

And there they sleep for many days.

They’re undergoing a metamorphosis,

This means they change in many ways.

In 7-10 days, in 7-10 days,

Something magical occurs,

The pupa changes into a butterfly

And will soon work hard to emerge!
