Prerequisites/requirements
Expected learning outcomes (according to Dublin Descriptors) (it is recommended that they are congruent with the learning outcomes contained in A4a, A4b, A4c tables of the SUA-CdS) / Knowledge and understanding: the course aims to provide the tools to know and understand the technical issues related to the functioning of the banks and insurance companies, through a careful analysis of the activities and the overall governance of these institutions.
Applying knowledge and understanding: students will gain the ability to apply theoretical concepts to concrete situations, through the use of case studies and practical examples.
Making informed judgements and choices: independent judgment will be encouraged through the use of the skills acquired in the analysis of specific cases and in the reflection on the events contingent, realized through specialized press and research papers.
Communicating knowledge and understanding: the student will have to acquire skills of communication and exposure with appropriate technical language.
Capacities to continue learning:the course will enable students to acquire and develop the ability to learn, by indicating an appropriate method of study to be used to address topics.
Contents / The course is divided in two parts, the first devoted to banks, the second to insurance companies. Within the first module, the course aims to deepen the following issues:
  • business, organization and governance of banks;
  • instruments of credit intermediation and securities in the banks activity;
  • financial statement and capital requirements;
  • social responsibility in banks and ethical finance.
Within the module dedicated to insurance companies, the course will explore the following topics:
  • management and regulation of insurance companies;
  • Insurance contracts: characteristics and distribution;
  • financial statement of insurance companies and capital requirements;
  • pension funds and supplementary pension.
