Business Gifts and Entertainment Policy

A number of companies that <Company Name> deals with occasionally bring in small tokens of appreciation for providing them with business. A business gift is a ‘thing of value’ that you provide or receive in connection with your work that may influence business decisions. Business gifts include meals, cocktails, entertainment, tickets to sports or cultural events, transportation, and certain promotional items.

Policy

All business gifts should be immediately reported to your manager for consideration. Business gifts need to be evaluated specifically and the purpose of the gift must be deemed appropriate in order to accept the gift.

Procedure

In general gifts of value greater than <$25 / $50 / $100> should not be accepted.

Some general rules when evaluating a business gift are as follows:

  • You should never give or receive money as a business gift.
  • You should not solicit business gifts.
  • Option 1: You may not accept unsolicited, non-monetary gifts.>
  • Option 2: You may accept unsolicited, non-monetary gifts that have a value of less than <$25 / $50> and that are consistent with common courtesy and accepted business practice. You must obtain prior approval from management before accepting any gift having a value of more than $50.>
  • Employees are prohibited from accepting any of the ‘under-the-table’ payment, kickback, bribe, rebate or other improper payment in connection with any corporate expenditure or sale of goods or services. This policy extends to any family members.
  • You may not offer gifts, gratuities, or any other benefit or favour outside of the approved promotional items of <Company Name>, to a current or anticipated supplier, vendor, customer or competitor of <Company Name> in connection with the purchase or sale of goods or services.
  • Avoid giving or receiving any business gift that could be seen as trying to improperly influence a sale or contract, a condition for receiving a contract, or creating an obligation to buy or sell services.

While it may be acceptable to receive small business gifts, employees should not feel pressured in any way to do business with these companies as a result of a gift. If an employee does feel such pressure, they are encouraged to discuss the issue with their manager.

<Company Name> reserves the right to alter, modify, amend or change human resources policies at its sole discretion. Employees will be provided appropriate notice of any changes to policy.
