Differentiation Strategies
·  Special Needs Learners will have access to the Student Edition Audio set that accompanies our class set, access to vocabulary flash cards, and skill builders. Students will also receive modified tests and quizzes
·  English Language Learners will have access to the Student Edition Audio set, access to vocabulary builders with visuals, and the Interactive Skills Tutor from our class set
·  Advanced/Gifted and Talented Students will have access to our Primary Source for World History Library set
·  Various learning styles of students will be addressed with the multiple activities such as cooperative groups and teacher modeling planned for this unit

EXPLORATION
Activity One
GIST activity [Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text]: Task for students is to write a summary of the text in 20 words. The words capture the “gist” of the text. Students will be divided into groups of three.
·  Teacher models the process by displaying a table with 20 boxes on the Smartboard [see attachment]
·  Teacher thinks aloud and begins to complete the 20 box summary
·  Students work within the group to complete the GIST
·  GIST Topic: Inca Empire
Text will be taken from Readworks Digital. Our assignment will be to read the article “The Land of the Four Quarters.” [some students will be allowed to listen to the text]

·  Read the article, review vocabulary, and complete question set
Activity Two
Table Talk: Students first divided into pairs then later pairs will join to form groups of four. Teacher writes subject matter on board. Our topics today are: Machu Picchu and Conquest of the Incas. After viewing video clips from Icurio, each student will have two minutes to write a reflection of the topic. Next, share reflections with partner and write a response to partner’s reflection. Four minutes will be allotted for this. Pairs are then joined to form small groups. Responses are shared within the group and one response is chosen to share with the entire class.

EXPLANATION
The Incas Presentation: This presentation addresses 3 Essential Questions utilizing higher order thinking skills. Slides include information and video clips about Incan civilization, some key terms and important figures, facts about the famous landmark Machu Picchu, and what led to the fall of the empire.

Graphic Organizers: Three graphic organizers will be used to guide students in this lesson. We will use Main Idea organizers to identify main ideas and three supporting details about Incan Civilization and Machu Picchu. Next, we will use the Cause and Effect organizer to discuss what effects the arrival of the Spanish had on the Inca.
