Good evening and welcome to our today’s program. This is our usual evening HIV /AIDS program. In this program we are going to talk about NUTRITION AND HIV/AIDS. Feel welcome I am your host and presenter RUKIA ATIENO OUKO.

Let us begin by asking this question.Why do you EAT

Generally, we eat so that our bodies can:

-Develop, repair and replace cells, tissues and muscles

-Produce energy to keep us warm and enable us to move and work

-Develop protection and resistance against infections.

-Fight and recover from sickness

What happens when you get HIV infected?

When HIV infection occurs, our body’s immune system is attacked and weakened. With time, HIV manages to rob our body of protection or resistance, rendering it prone to all types of infection eg Diarrhoea, TB, among others.

Good nutritional status is important from the onset of HIV infection, because:

-It enables an infected person cultivate healthy eating habits

-Helps an infected person maintain good health and equality life

-It reinforces the effects of medication

-Nutrition education allows for “all time” food security

-Enjoy a variety of foods in order to get adequate supply of all nutrients.

-Eat staple foods with every meal, they supply energy and some protein. Eg rice, maize, sorghum, irish and sweet potatoes, cassava, yams, bananas.

-Eat legumes, they provide proteins, vitamins, mineral s and fibre needed to develop and repair tissue as well as build muscles. Eg soya, beans, peas, groundnuts, lentils, simsim

-East dairy and animal products they supply high quality proteins, vitamins and minerals which help to strengthen muscles and the immune system. Eg meat, chicken, fish, eggs and dairy products.

-East plenty of vegetables and fruits they are an important part of a healthy and balanced meal since they help our bodies fight infection. Eg spinach, pumpkin and cassava leaves, green pepper, carrots, mangoes and papaya, tomatoes, cabbage, oranges, lemons, passion, grapefruit, baobab fruit, pineapples.

-Fats, oils and sugar are a good source of energy and also help stimulate appetite. Eg margarine, cooking oil, coconut cream, avocados, sunflower, groundnuts, simsim, cheese, honey, jam, sugar, cakes, biscuits

-Drinking plenty of clean boiled water.

How to handle some common complications in HIV/AIDS

Diarrhea

-Take plenty of fluids eg water, soup, juice or ORS (oral rehydration solution)

-Eat soft, mashed and moist foods, eg porridge, potatoes, bananas, pumpkins

-East ripe bananas and some vegetables

-East small frequent meals

Loss of Appetite

-Drinking plenty of water, milk, yoghut, juice after meals.

-Add flavour to your food, eg fresh lemon juice, spices.

-Take small frequent meals

-Eat to regain appetite. Eat with family the people you LOVe

Vomiting and Nausea

-Drink fluids in small quantities, eg lemon in hot water, ginger or herbal tea

-Sit up when eating

-Request someone to prepare food

-Eat dry and salty foods eg bread, cereal

-Avoid fatty and very sweet foods

Sore Mouth

-Eat soft, mashed and moist foods, fruits and vegetables eg pumpkins, bananas, papaya, yoghut, spinach/ terere, soups, pasta, avocados

-Take cold drinks, soups and vegetables

-Chew small pieces of green mango or papaya to relieve pain

-Spice tea, fermented sour yoghurt helps ease mouth sores

Constipation

-Eat wholemeal brown bread, nuts, cereals, raw vegetables, fruits, yoghurt.

-Drink plenty of fluids eg warm water before meals

-Sit on the toilet each day at the same time

-Keep fit-do exercises regularly to improve digestion.

Skin infections

-Take plenty of foods rich in vitamins A and B6 eg green leafy vegetables, yellow and orange vegetables, liver, cereals, nuts

Coughs, Colds, Flu and Sore Throat

-Take plenty of water and other fluids eg tea, fresh juices.

-Breathe in hot vapour.

-Gargle a strong solution of salt and water severally

-Drink a solution of crushed lemon mixed with honey

Fever

-take plenty of fluids

-sponge body with wet cloth to reduce temperature.

-Use traditional remedies such as neem (Mwarubaini) tea or paracetamol

Do not give asprin to children or people with stomach or kidney problems

Always seek frequent or prompt medical services at your nearest health services provider
