SECTION 07511 - BUILT-UP ASPHALT ROOFING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes asphalt glass-fibre felt roof membrane with aggregate surface.
  2. This Section also includes the following roofing related work:
  3. Roof insulation.
  4. Temporary roof membrane.
  5. Related Sections: The following Sections contain requirements related to this Section:
  6. Division 6 Section "Miscellaneous Carpentry" for wood nailers, curbs, and wood cants.
  7. Division 7 Section "Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim" for metal counter flashings.

1.3DEFINITIONS

  1. Thermal Resistance (R-value) is the reciprocal of thermal conductance (C-value) which is the rate of heat flow through a material of the thickness indicated. Thermal resistance (R-value) is expressed by the temperature difference in degrees F (Kelvin) between the two exposed faces required to cause 1 Btu to flow through 1 sq. ft. per hour (1 watt to flow through 1 sq. m) at the mean temperature indicated.

1.4SUBMITTALS

  1. Manufacturer's Certification indicating that all bulk bituminous materials delivered to Project comply with required standards. Include quantity and statistical and descriptive data for each product. Submit certificate with each load before it is used.
  2. Include continuous log showing time and temperature for each load of bulk bitumen, indicating date obtained from manufacturer, where held, and how transported prior to final heating and application on roof.
  3. For asphalt bitumen, provide a label on each container or certification with each load of bulk bitumen, indicating flash point (FP), softening point (SP), and equiviscous temperature (EVT).
  4. Shop Drawings: Submit detail drawings for the following; manufacturer's standard details without modifications specific to this Project will not be accepted.:
  5. Layout of tapered insulation materials indicating each individual piece including fastener layout for I-90 uplift.
  6. Each type penetration detail.
  7. Each type joint detail.
  8. Each type termination detail.
  9. Show joint locations and method of jointing, and method of anchorage of fabricated work; show plan layouts at 1/4 inch scale, and details at minimum 3inch scale.
  10. Product Data:
  11. Submit manufacturer's product specifications and descriptive literature.
  12. Include data on membranes, bituminous materials, insulation, fasteners, and accessories.
  13. Submit a schedule of each type mechanical fastener including length selection, clearly marked to indicate conformance with specified requirements.
  14. Samples: Submit 6 inch by 6 inch samples of each of the following proposed for use:
  15. Each type membrane.
  16. Each type roof insulation.
  17. Mechanical insulation fasteners.
  18. Include membrane delivery tickets stating lot number and date of manufacture, stapled to a one square foot sample of each membrane cut from each roll upon delivery.
  19. Pre-Roofing Conference: Submit copies of pre-roofing conference records.
  20. Contract Close-out Submittals: Submit copies of specified warranties.

1.5QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Installer Qualifications:
  2. Installer Certification: Obtain written certification from manufacturer of built-up roofing system certifying that Installer is approved by manufacturer to install specified roofing system. Provide copy of certification for Owner’s Representative prior to awarding roofing work.
  3. Installer's Field Supervision: Require Installer to maintain a full-time supervisor/foreman who is on job site during times that built-up asphalt roofing work is in progress and who is experienced in installing roofing systems similar to type and scope required for this Project.
  4. The following companies are acceptable as Installers:
  5. Bothwell-Accurate
  6. Schreiber Corp.
  7. Semple-Gooder.
  8. Luttenberger.
  9. Manufacturer Qualifications: Obtain primary products, including each type of roofing sheet (felt), bitumen, composition flashings, and any vapour retarder, from a single manufacturer listed herein. Provide secondary products as recommended by manufacturer of primary products to use with roofing system specified.
  10. FM Listing: Provide built-up roofing system and component materials that have been evaluated by FM System for fire spread, uplift resistance, and hail damage and are listed in "Factory Mutual Approval Guide" for ClassI construction.
  11. Provide roof covering materials bearing FM approval marking on bundle, package, or container, indicating that material has been subjected to FM's examination and follow-up inspection service.
  12. Preliminary Roofing Conference: As soon as possible after award of built-up roofing work, meet with Installer (Roofer), installers of substrate construction, such as decks, and other work adjoining roof system including penetrating work and rooftop units, Owner’s Representative, Owner, and representatives of other entities directly concerned with roofing system performance, including Owner's insurers and test agencies.
  13. Review requirements (Contract Documents), submittals, status of coordinating work, availability of materials, and installation facilities and establish preliminary installation schedule. Review requirements for inspections, tests, certifications, forecasted weather conditions, governing regulations, insurance requirements, and proposed installation procedures.
  14. Discuss roofing system protection requirements for construction period extending beyond roofing installation. Discuss possible need for temporary roofing.
  15. Record discussion, including agreement or disagreement on matters of significance; furnish copy of recorded discussions to each participant. If substantial disagreements exist at conclusion of conference, determine how disagreements will be resolved and set date for reconvening conference.
  16. Pre-application Roofing Conference: Approximately 2 weeks prior to scheduled commencement of built-up roofing installation and associated work, meet at Project site with Installer, installer of each component of associated work, installers of deck or substrate construction to receive roofing work, installers of rooftop units and other work in and around roofing that must precede or follow roofing work--including mechanical work, Owner’s Representative, Owner, roofing system manufacturer's representative, and other representatives directly concerned with work performance, including Owner's insurers, test agencies, and governing authorities, where applicable.
  17. Review foreseeable methods and procedures related to roofing work, including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:
  18. Tour representative areas of roofing substrates (decks), inspect and discuss condition of substrate, roof drains, curbs, penetrations, and other preparatory work performed by other trades.
  19. Review structural loading limitations of steel deck and inspect deck for loss of flatness and for required mechanical fastening.
  20. Review roofing system requirements: Drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
  21. Review required submittals, both complete and incomplete.
  22. Review and finalize construction schedule related to roofing work and verify availability of materials, Installer's personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to make progress and avoid delays.
  23. Review required inspection, testing, certifying, and material use accounting procedures.
  24. Review weather and forecasted weather conditions and procedures for coping with unfavorable conditions, including possibility of temporary roofing, if it is not a mandatory requirement.
  25. Record (Contractor) discussions of conference, including decisions and agreements or disagreements reached, and furnish a copy for each attendee. If substantial disagreements exist at the conclusion of the conference, determine how disagreements will be resolved and set a date for reconvening the conference.
  26. Except as modified and supplemented herein, comply with roofing manufacturer's and other materials manufacturer's published catalogues, general requirements and specific recommendations.
  27. With respect to methods of installation, comply with industry practices, specifically SMACNA and NRCA unless otherwise indicated herein.
  28. ULC Listing: Provide roofing system and component materials which have been tested for application and slopes indicated and are listed by Underwriters Laboratories Canada, Inc. (ULC) for Class A external fire exposure and which are "Fire Classified" and pass "Class 90" wind uplift resistance. Provide roof covering materials bearing Classification Marking (ULC) on bundle, package or container indicating that materials have been produced under ULC's Classification and Follow-up Service.
  29. FM Listing: Provide roofing system and component materials, including flashings, which have been evaluated by Factory Mutual System in Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-29 S for fire spread, wind-uplift, and hail damage and are listed in "Factory Mutual Approval Guide" for "Class I" construction, including I-90 zoned wind resistance. Provide roof covering materials bearing FM approval marking on bundle, package or container, indicating that material has been subjected to FM's examination and follow-up inspection service.

1.6PROJECT CONDITIONS

  1. Weather Condition Limitations: Proceed with roofing work only when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit work to be performed according to manufacturers' recommendations and warranty requirements.
  2. Temporary Roofing: When adverse job conditions or weather conditions prevent permanent roofing and associated work from being installed according to requirements and Contractor determines that roofing cannot be delayed because of need for job progress or protection of other work, install temporary roofing. Engage roofing Installer to provide temporary roofing and to remove it prior to proceeding with permanent roofing work.
  3. Record as a Change Order the Owner's agreement to proceed with temporary roofing along with any additional costs and other changes to Contract Documents.

1.7ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Comply with manufacturer's written requirements for maintenance of substrate and ambient temperatures, ventilation, and other conditions required to properly execute and protect the work.
  2. Weather Condition Limitations: Proceed with roofing work only when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit work to be performed in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and warranty requirements.
  3. Do not apply roofing membrane during inclement weather or when precipitation is forecast.
  4. Do not apply roofing membrane to damp or frozen deck surface.
  5. Do not expose materials vulnerable to water or sun damage in quantities greater than can be weatherproofed during the same day.
  6. At lower ambient temperatures, take precautions to ensure that bitumen is maintained at or slightly above the minimum acceptable temperature at the point of roofing application as recommended by the roofing manufacturer.
  7. No material is to be applied when the outside free air temperature is below 33 degF.

1.8JOB CONDITIONS

  1. Coordinate Work of this Section with interfacing and adjoining work for proper sequencing of each installation. Ensure best possible weather resistance and durability of work and protection of materials and finishes.
  2. Roof Protection: Do not use new roof installation areas as storage or work staging area except to extent required in accomplishing new roofing work. Protect new or existing roofs where material is stored or equipment is placed or operated, with not less than 1/2inch CDX plywood.
  3. The Contractor shall plan and conduct the operations of the work so that each section started on one day is complete and thoroughly protected before the close of work for that day.
  4. The Owner has certain rules to minimize interference with normal plant operations and the Contractor and his personnel shall abide by them. The Contractor shall contact the Owner's Representative for specific information regarding the rules governing all operations of this project. Provide adequate protection of Owner’s personnel, equipment and operations and do not interfere with production operation in any way. Construction activity posing any risk to Owner’s personnel, equipment or operation shall be done during Plant’s non-production time periods.
  5. The Contractor shall at all times during the contract, keep the premises free from accumulation of waste materials and rubbish. At the completion of the work, the Contractor shall remove all excess materials and debris from the site, and leave all roof surfaces clean.
  6. All surfaces to be covered shall be smooth, dry, and free from dirt, debris, and foreign material before any of this work is installed. The Contractor shall be responsible for guarding against fires, and shall provide suitable fire extinguishers conveniently located at the site. Competent operators shall be in attendance at all times equipment is in use. Materials shall be stored neatly in areas designated by the Owner and dispersed so as to present a minimum fire hazard. Load placed on roof at any point shall not exceed safe load for which the roof is designed.
  7. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations for particular conditions of installation or application in each case. If printed instructions are not available or do not apply to job conditions, consult manufacturer's Technical Representative for specific recommendations before proceeding the work.
  8. Protect site and building from damage during handling of roofing materials. Restore or replace Owner's property damaged as a result of construction activity at no cost to the Owner. Tarps must be hung over the side of the building where materials are being loaded or unloaded. A chute, running from the roof to the rubbish removal vehicle, shall be used at all times for removing all excess roofing materials and debris from the roof surface.
  9. Contractor shall cooperate with Owner’s Quality Assurance Representative and Manufacturer's Representative in establishing inspection procedures and shall conform to recommend installation procedures. Weekly on-site inspections of roofing work shall be provided by the Roofing System Manufacturer’s Representative including attendance at relevant meetings and a written inspection report delivered to Owner. Report shall include progress and degree of (non)compliance of roofing work with specifications and manufacturer’s recommendations.
  10. Construction personnel shall be prohibited from entering portions of the existing building(s) which do not relate to the scope of work performed under this Contract. Owner's security requirements shall be reviewed and enforced at all times by the Contractor. Do not block aisleways or interfere with the Owner's operations.
  11. Provide and maintain temporary protections or barricades as required to prevent injury to Owner's personnel and the public due to operations specified herein or damage to building interior due to exposure to the elements.
  12. Handle and install all materials in conformance with roof system manufacturer’s recommendations and standard details. Include costs for all material and detail requirements to accommodate existing Plant conditions, in base proposal to meet warranty requirements.

1.9DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Store and handle roofing materials to ensure dryness. Store in a dry, well-ventilated, weather-tight place. Unless protected from weather or other moisture sources, do not leave unused felts on the roof overnight or when roofing work is not in progress. Store rolls of felt and other sheet materials on end on pallets or another raised surface. Handle and store materials or equipment in a manner to avoid significant or permanent deck deflection.
  2. Deliver products in manufacturer's original containers, dry, undamaged, with seals and labels intact with roll materials standing on end.
  3. Store materials to comply with manufacturer's directions to prevent deterioration from moisture, heat, cold, direct sunlight, or other causes.
  4. Maintain roll materials at not less than 50 degF for 48 hours prior to their installation.
  5. Store and handle roofing sheets in a manner which will ensure that there is no possibility of significant moisture pick-up. Store in a dry, well ventilated, weather-tight place. Unless protected from weather or other moisture sources do not leave unused materials on the roof overnight or when roofing work is not in progress. Store rolls and other sheet materials on end on pallets or other raised surface. Handle and store materials or equipment in a manner to avoid significant or permanent deflection of deck.
  6. Assume full responsibility for the protection and safekeeping of the Work under this Contract and stored materials on the site.
  7. Move any stored materials and equipment under Contractor's control, which interfere with operations of the Owner.

1.10WARRANTY

  1. Provide special joint project warranty and roofing system warranty, signed by Contractor, roofing and flashing installer(s), and manufacturer, agreeing to repair or replace defective materials and workmanship including all associated costs during warranty period. Roofing system manufacturer shall submit to Owner written verification that all materials, details and roof conditions are in compliance with the terms and requirements of the Warranty. Materials shall include all roofing materials whether manufactured by the roofing system manufacturer or by others.
  2. Warranty Period: 15 years from date of Substantial Completion with No Dollar Limitation.
  3. The warranty shall not deprive the Owner of other rights the Owner may have under other provisions of the Contract Documents and will be in addition to and run concurrent with other warranties made by the Contractor under requirements of the Contract Documents.
  4. Provide a roofing system warranty to include coverage against defects in materials and workmanship resulting in failure to resist penetration of moisture caused in whole or in part by work of this section including roofing membrane, membrane flashings, copings and fascia, metal flashings, roof insulation, and roofing accessories. Include coverage of damage caused by wind gusts of up to 70 mph (Beaufort Level 12).
  5. Provide for annual inspections by roofing system manufacturer with written report submitted to Plant Manager within 30 days of inspection, to coincide with flashing inspection during warranty period.
  6. Insurance Certification: Assist Owner in preparation and submittal of roof installation acceptance certification with flashing endorsement as may be necessary in connection with fire and extended coverage insurance on roofing and associated work.

1.11MAINTENANCE SERVICE

  1. Agreement to Maintain Roofing: Submit two executed copies of "Agreement to Maintain Roofing" on form included at end of this section, covering work of this section including roofing membrane, flexible sheet and metal flashings, and roofing accessories, signed and countersigned by Installer (Roofer), flashing and sheet metal installer, and Contractor.
  2. During maintenance period roofing and flashing manufacturers and installers shall jointly inspect and make emergency repairs to defects and leaks in roofing and flashing system within 24 hours of receipt of notice from the Owner.
  3. Perform necessary, permanent repairs and restore the affected areas to the standard of the Contract Documents at no additional cost to the Owner, except if it is determined that such leaks and defects were caused by abuse, or by lightning, hurricane, tornado, hail storm, or other unusual natural phenomena, or failure of related work performed by other trades not a party to the warranty agreement.
