“Building for Tomorrow on Yesterday’s Strength”— publication to mark the 35th anniversary of the Faculty of Law, the University of Hong Kong

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Faculty of Law, HKU, the HKU Law Alumni Association published a book called “Building for Tomorrow on Yesterday’s Strength”.

Congratulatory messages were written by the Chief Justice, the Hon. Mr Justice Li; the Secretary for Justice, the Hon. Ms Elsie Leung; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association, Mr Edward Chan SC; and the President of the Law Society of Hong Kong, Mr Michael Lintern-Smith. Past and present Deans and professors of the Faculty wrote, sharing their experience and expertise. Professor Yash Ghai, Sir Y.K. Pao Chair Professor in Public Law, a renowned expert in constitutional law, takes the readers through a journey round constitutions, including constitutions of countries such as Kenya, Fiji and Papua New Guinea which he helped drafted. The present Dean of the Faculty, Professor Johannes Chan SC, tells the readers a short story about his involvement in a case on press freedom from the Magistracy to the Privy Council. Professor Albert Chen, a former Dean, shares his experience and thoughts on the development of Chinese law. These and other articles seek to demonstrate the strength of the Faculty. As the Hon. Chief Justice said in his congratulatory message:-

“As a prestigious faculty built with dedication, foresight and hard work, the Faculty of Law has provided quality legal education over the years and has produced a pool of highly competent legal professionals who are serving the community in different capacities. Many graduates from the Faculty of Law are leaders of the legal profession and the community and some of them are distinguished members of the judiciary”.

The publication also includes touching short pieces and poem, as well as more than a hundred interesting photos provided by the law alumni. Readers will be able to see old photos of the Hon. Mr Justice Patrick Chan, permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal, the Hon. Mr Andrew Liao SC, Executive Councillor, the Hon. Mr Ronny Tong SC, the Hon. Ms Audrey Eu SC, and the Hon. Mr Alan Leong SC, Legislative Councillors, and Mr Robert Allcock, Solicitor General.

The publication comes with a VCD containing more photos provided by the alumni. The background music was played by two law alumni. The publication is sold at HK$150 ($30 for local postage) and is now available at the Faculty of Law at 4/F., K.K. Leung Building and the University Bookstore at G/F Run Run Shaw Building.
