Atoms – using the Build an Atom PhET Simulation
Author: Jackie Esler http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/build-an-atom
Build an Atom Simulation Name ______Hour: ______
Start: 1.
2. Click on the first link
3. Click on the button.
4. Explore the simulation. Be sure to click on everything.
5. When your teacher says it is time to start
Ø click on the reset all button.
Ø open the boxes called Net Charge and Mass number
Ø These boxes and the periodic table box will help you fill in the data needed below.
Does mass # change? (Y/N) / Does charge change? (Y/N) / Do protons stay in the nucleus? / When you add protons does the symbol change on the periodic table?6. Experiment by putting some protons into the nucleus of the atom (on the X).
7 Experiment by putting some neutrons into the nucleus of the atom (on the X).
Does mass # change? (Y/N) / Does charge change? (Y/N) / Do neutrons stay in the nucleus? / When you add neutrons does the symbol change on the periodic table?8. Experiment by putting 10 electrons into the nucleus of the atom (on the X).
Does mass # change? (Y/N) / Does charge change? (Y/N) / Do electrons stay in the nucleus? / When you add electrons does the symbol change on the periodic table?9. Look over your data tables for protons, neutrons and electrons.
Two things I noticed are: 1. ______
2. ______
Time to apply your understanding of the atom…
10. Put 3 protons into nucleus of the atom. Fill in the following:
Name of atom:______atom or ion? ______net charge ______
Decide how you will build a neutral atom that is stable. Practice making atoms using your ideas.
Once you are able to do this several times on the simulation- starting with different numbers of protons- write out the steps of your building plan!
We totally get this and we are ready to try the game! (if so, check-in with your teacher!)
If not…raise your hand for help!
Go on to tab...
1. Set the game to Level 1 and sound off, what is your best score and time?
Score: ______/10 Time: ______
2. Once Level 1 is complete, set to Level 2, what is your best score and time?
Score: ______/10 Time: ______
3. Once Level 2 is complete, set to Level 3, what is your best score and time?
Score: ______/10 Time: ______
Teacher check-off/check-in…
