Welcome to another summer of fun, instruction, and recreational things to do with family and friends. This brochure offers activities, lessons, events, and trips for all. Let summer recreation help create your children’s summer fun and memories – of playing with friends, warm days, people laughing, and fun times.

BLHS Community Education Summer Program will begin on Monday, June 5th. Please click on youth programs at the community education link at http://www.blhsd.org/

for updates to the program. Please don’t wait until the last minute to sign up. Registration and fees for most activities are due by Wednesday, May 24th--but, there are some earlier deadlines which have been announced. Some activities need a minimum number of participants, so encourage a buddy to sign up, too!! Where a grade is indicated use grade going into this fall unless otherwise stated.

Be sure to include your phone number(s) and an email address on your registration forms so we can contact you if necessary. In case of inclement weather, text messages will be sent out and our Facebook page will be updated.

Title: Dirt, Insects, and Gardening

Dates and Times: Wednesday mornings for 6 weeks starting June 14th through July 26th (NO CLASS JULY 5th) from 11:00 -12:00 PM.

Description:Let’s explore the messy side of plant and Soil Science. Get your hands dirty making terrariums, mini green houses and composting and dissecting plants. Learn about bugs, get muddy, muddier, and muddiest, and be a hot house detective. Youth will practice problem solving, teamwork and decision making skills.

There must be a minimum of 8 participants to hold this program.

CAMPS & CLINICS

Activity #1 Pacesetter Basketball Camp (for those going into Grades K-12) per participant HECTOR campus. Monday through Wednesday June 19, 20, 21. Grades 7-12 will be from 9:00-12:00, Grades 4-6 from 1:00-3:00 and grades K-3 from 3:00-4:00. Cost for grades 7-12 will be $8-, grades 4-6 $60, K-3 is $40. PLEASE FILL OUT THE APPROPRIATE PACESETTER FORM IN THE BACK OF THE PACKET AND MAIL YOUR PAYMENT DIRECTLY TO PACESETTER.

Activity #2 Pacesetter Volleyball Camp (for those going into Grades 5-12) Monday through Wednesday, June 12, 13, 14 at the HECTOR Big Gym participants in grades 9-12 will be at 9:00-12:00 and participants in grades 5-8 will be at 1:00- 3:00. Cost for grades 9-12 will be $80 and grades 5-8 $60 PLEASE FILL OUT THE APPROPRIATE PACESETTER FORM I THE BACK OF THE PACKET AND MAIL YOUR PAYMENT DIRECTLY TO PACESETTER.

Activity #3 Wrestling Camp (for those going into Grades K-6) $25 per participant. Tuesday through Thursday, July 25, 26, 27 from 5:30-7:30pm. Participants will learn basic skills along with the rules, strategy, and scoring in the sport. BLHS Elementary Wrestlers are strongly recommended to attend. Activity #4 Football Youth Camp Only for BLHS Students (for those going into Grades K-8) Offered by BLHS Football Coaching Staff on Monday through Thursday, the week of July 17-20,

6-7:00 pm on the HECTOR practice field. $35 per participant. Be sure to include a T-shirt size. Minimum of ten required.

Activity #5 Girls Softball (for girls going into Grades 2-6) $20 per participant Offered on M, T, W, June 5, 6, 7 at the BUFFALO LAKE Ball Park 8-9 AM, Bring a glove if you have one.

OUTDOOR GAMES (for those going into Grades 1-6) We have a variety of fun games and activities planned for the boys and girls. You may sign up for any location.

Activity #6 Outdoor Games 1 $15 per participant Meet by the playground across from the school in BUFFALO LAKE, Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday, June 5, 6, 7 and June 12, 13, 14 from 9:00-10:30 am.

Activity #7 Outdoor Games 2 $15 per participant Meet at the Shelter in the City Park in STEWART, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday June 19, 20, 21 and June 26, 27, 28, from 9:00-10:30 AM. Indoor games at the Community Center if it rains.

Activity #8 Outdoor Games 3 $15 per participant HECTOR Practice field, meet by the outdoor basketball hoops in high school parking lot, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, July 17, 18, 19 and July 24, 25, 26 , from 9:00-10:30 am.

Activity #9 Soccer (Grades 1-5) $10 per participant Meet at the high-school practice field in HECTOR. Tuesday nights, June 6th through July 11th from 7:00-8:00pm. Come and learn the basics of playing soccer, teamwork and sportsmanship. There will be NO Soccer on July 4th.

Activity #10 Kickball $10 per participant for all evenings high-school practice field in HECTOR, Tuesdays, June 6th through July 11th from 6:00-7:00 pm. (boys & girls going into Grades 1- 5) Participants will learn safety, scoring, courtesy, and sportsmanship. There will be NO kickball on July 4th.

Activity #11 Slowpitch $5 per participant for all evenings HECTOR high-school practice field, Tuesdays, June 6th through June 27th from 6:00-7:00 pm. (boys & girls going into Grade 2) Participants will learn how to hit a pitched ball and strengthen their throwing and catching skills. Students should bring a glove if they have one.

Activity #12 T-ball (boys & girls going into Kindergarten & 1st Grade) $10 per participant BUFFALO LAKE ball park, Thursdays June 10th through July 13th; from 6:00-7:00pm. Bring your glove if you have one. There will be NO T-ball on July 6th.

Activity #13 Art in the STEWART Park (for those going into Grades 1-8) $15 per participant OR $5 if you bring your own white t-shirt. Monday and Wednesday, July 17th and 19th from 3:00-4:30pm. We will do a variety of activities, crafts, and other creative things. Incase of inclement weather, art will take place in the Stewart Community Center.

SCHOOL READINESS SUMMER PROGRAM

Activity #14 Pre-Kindergarten School Readiness Summer Program August 7-11 and August 14-18 from 8:00 AM- 11:00 AM. We are happy to offer a Summer Preschool/ School Readiness for children entering Kindergarten this Fall 2017. Classes at the Buffalo Lake campus Monday through Friday mornings from 8:00- 11:00. The program will run for 2 week beginning August 7th and ending August 18th. Cost of the two-week session is $100 (made out to ECFE), which can be paid all at once or in two payments. We will be working on Kindergarten Readiness skills as we explore, create and have fun! The Kindergarten teachers Miss Meinert and Mrs. Squibb will be running the program. Jody Weispfennig will be sending out registration materials. If you don’t get a form, please call her at 833-5311, ext. 204.

SUMMER READING FUN!

Offered by the Hector Public Library

FREE –REGISTER AT THE LIBRARY

Students from ages 5 to 12 will read at home and log their time. Teens, ages 13-18, will fill out short book reviews to qualify for prizes. Each week there are games, crafts, and reading incentives. Stop by the library to register.

This program is a great way to keep reading skills strong over the summer months, call for more information, 320-848-2841.

Activity #15 PRAIRIE FIRE CHILDREN’S THEATRE (Participants must be at least 7 years old) Join us for our production of Sleeping Beauty July 10th- 15th. Auditions are Monday, July 10th at 4:00 PM at The Palace Theatre in Hector. Auditionees must be present for 2 hours following auditions. A rehearsal schedule for the remainder of the week will be given out on the day of auditions. Performances are Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15th at 7:00 PM. Audition Fee is $25 per participant.

Activity #16 Healthy Cooking for Kids- (Grades 1-8) $20 Monday June 5th- Wednesday June 7th. 10:30-11:30 AM, Buffalo Lake Staff Lounge. Participants will learn how to prepare healthy snacks, learn kitchen safety, and nutrition. Students will take a walking field trip to the Buffalo Lake Grocery Store. Instructor: Joy Ahlbrecht

Activity #17 Coding for Kids (Grades 1-8) $20 Monday June 19th and Tuesday June 20th, 10:30-11:45 AM. Hector Middle School Computer Lab (enter through East Door). Students will practice coding on various websites. Students will then create a game to play and share with the other participants. Instructor: Joy Ahlbrecht

WATER ADVENTURES **All Ages – All children Kindergarten and younger must be accompanied by an adult for all the water adventures; Activities #20-24. Some of these water adventures leave shortly after another activity, if your child is in an activity right before the bus leaves they can leave from the town their first activity is and bring their bags/lunches with them to the first activity. CHILD MUST BE ABLE TO SWIM ON THEIR OWN.

Activity #18 Redwood Area Aquatic Center $10 Tuesday, July 18th. A fun and exciting experience for all ages! Including a zero depth entry, a diving area which includes both a 1 meter and 3 meter diving board, and an Aquaclimb climbing wall, a plunge area which consist of two slides, a swimming and lap swim area, and a lily pad area where you walk across the anchored lilies and try to make it to the other side! Bring money for snacks if you please, as there are short breaks and a concession stand available. Leaving from the Cactus Jacks parking lot in Stewart at 12:00 PM, West Side of the BLHS Elementary School in Buffalo Lake at 12:15, and the Hector High School Parking lot at 12:30. Please bring a lunch or money for concessions. We will then swim from 1:30- 4:30. Return to Hector at 5:15, Buffalo Lake at 5:30, and Stewart at 5:45.

Activity #19 Gaylord Water Park $10 Thursday, June 15th.Fun and exciting new water park for all ages! Two slides, basketball, climbing wall, open swim and zero depth entrance. Pack a lunch and we will eat a picnic and play games in the park before swimming begins from 1-4pm. Bring money for snacks if you wish, as there are short breaks and concessions available. Leaving Hector school parking lot at 11:30 am, BL (West side of Elementary School- where buses pick up) 11:45 am; and Stewart (Cactus Jack II) at 12:00 pm. Return to Stewart at 4:45, BL at 5, and Hector at 5:15

Activity #20 Pool Party All Ages FREE Thursday, July 27, Swimming from 7-9pm. For all participants and families of the summer recreation program!

Activity #21 Transportation to Swimming Lessons at the HECTOR Pool

Youth, from Buffalo Lake or Stewart, who are interested in taking swimming lessons at the Hector Pool may sign-up to ride a bus for the 12:00 NOON lessons during Session 2 (July 6- July 19) and Session 3 (July 24- August 4) This is the only session that transportation will be available. If interested, fill-out the regular form that is sent out by Duane Hauer for the actual swimming lessons. This form is also on the BLHS website. Register for the bus transportation on the summer recreation registration form. A BLHS van or bus will pick-up at the Stewart City Park at 11:30 am and pick-up at the BLHS Elementary School in Buffalo Lake at 11:45 am. It will leave Hector at 12:45 pm for the return trip to Buffalo Lake and Stewart. Cost of all 10 rides: $15 total per participant, with a maximum of $30 per family. Note that this is only the cost of the transportation. You must sign-up separately for the lessons. The Swimming Pool is financed by the City of Hector and the transportation is provided by BLHS Community Education.

Activity #22 Como Zoo & Conservatory All Ages The bus cost is $10 per person Friday June 23rd. (There is no admission cost, but the zoo does like donations.) The zoo features a seal island, a large cat exhibit, a variety of aquatic life, primates, birds, African hoofed animals and a world-class polar bear exhibit. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is a half-acre indoor and outdoor facility with a number of different wings dedicated to a variety of plant life including bonsai trees, ferns, orchids, and seasonal flowers. Leaving Olivia Municipal Parking Lot at 7:30 am, Bird Island (Broaster) at 7:45, High School parking lot in Hector at 8:00 am, Buffalo Lake Elementary at 8:15 am, and Cactus Jacks II in Stewart at 8:30 am. Bring a bag lunch that is labeled with your name. Coolers will be provided to keep food cool. Spending money for souvenirs and treats are extra. We will return around 5:30 pm. Children under 14 must be chaperoned by an adult.

Activity #23 Valley Fair All Ages $40 per person for admission and transportation on Thursday, July 20th.Prepare to feel the presence that will make your senses come alive with excitement - a presence that goes beyond breathtaking views, beyond hair-raising adventures, soak city waterpark, beyond the thrilling rides like Wild Thing and Renegade. From the moment you enter, enchantment begins and the fun never ends. Leaving Olivia Municipal Parking Lot at 7:30 am, Bird Island (Broaster) at 7:45, High School parking lot in Hector at 8:00 am, Buffalo Lake Elementary at 8:15 am, and Cactus Jacks II in Stewart at 8:30 am. Will load bus around 4:00 pm to leave Valley Fair for home.Children under 14 must be chaperoned by an adult.
