SENER awarded contract for the Cerro Dragón combined-cycle power station in Argentina

Pan American Energy LCC has awarded SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas in partnership with Techint the contract for converting the power plant of the Cerro Dragón natural gas and oil field in the southern Argentine province of Chubut to a combined cycle.

The first stage of the contract involves developing the plant’s engineering, so as to later progress to an EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management) contract, which also includes the construction stage, assembly and testing. Once the cycle has been completed, the plant will generate 160 MW.

SENER’s capacity for optimizing the existing preliminary draft was an essential factor in the bidding process, which involved competing against other internationally renowned companies. Pan American Energy also acknowledged SENER’s experience in the Energy sector, including over 12 years of working with central electric power generation projects both in Spain and around the world.

Cerro Dragón is added to a diverse portfolio of Power and Process conducted in Argentina, where SENER has participated in the last six combined-cycle thermal power stations: Bicentenario, San Martín, Belgrano, Ensenada de Barragán, Brigadier López and now Cerro Dragón; other projects the company has performed are the regasification terminal in Escobar in the Province of Buenos Aires, the surface facilities for the Aguada Toledo and Sierra Barrosa fields in Neuquén, and, in the Nuclear sector, work on the Atucha II plant.

In Latin America, SENER has also worked on other combined-cycle plants, some still in development such as Termozulia II & III in Venezuela, and Poza Rica, Agua Prieta II and Norte in Mexico, in addition to petrochemical plants and refineries such as La Cangrejera in Mexico, ANCAP - La Teja in Uruguay, and the Caracol Quintero residual-oil conversion plant in Chile.
