I declare that this is all my own work:

Task 1 (P6)

  • Set up and test a simple local area network
  • Prepare the workspace
  • Install a network interface card
  • Test the installation of the card
  • Connect the PC to another PC in a peer to peer network
  • Use static IP addressing
  • Test communications
  • Connect the PC to a client-server network
  • Use dynamic addressing
  • Check communication and record the DHCP allocated IP address
  • Check communication with other computers
  • Set up a shared folder
  • Exchange files with other computers
  • This task will be assessed by witness statement

Task 2 (M2)

  • You will be presented with 4 PCs which are all reported as having network problems.
  • For each PC do the following:
  • Perform a systematic check to determine what the nature of the fault is
  • Describe possible solutions that could be applied in order to fix the fault
  • Carry out further tests to establish the exact cause of the problem and the actual solution that needs to be applied
  • Write up your findings in the form of an investigation report (a suitable template is on the wiki)

Task 3 (M3)

  • You are required to set up and configure security features on a local area network
  • Install an anti-virus program on a PC
  • Activate the Windows built in Firewall
  • Create a shared folder with read only access using permissions
  • This task will be assessed by witness statement and by a written report of the steps you took illustrated by screen shots.

Task 4 (D2)

  • Write a report of about 1 page of A4 detailing how security systems help reduce security risks in a local area network.
